Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank) - split

Peter,
Has anybody ever testing the water going into the mangroves and coming out? If memory serves me right you have slow flow and the length of those trays came to about 24' and I would be interested to see if there is any noticeable change in the water.
Joe

Wouldn't the growth be the test? If there is less growth at the exit of the mangrove system then you could make the case that the nutrients (or some other needed material) were not making it all the way to the end.

Just a thought.

Peter,
I haven't checked in for a few months and the growth is outstanding, a continued inspiration to all in the hobby! At some point you will be doing a lot of pruning (unless I have missed the discussion as time does not allow me to follow the thread full time.) What will you do with all the frags you will eventually be producing?

Here is why I question.

If we look at just growing some form of algae in a sump we can easily say its growth is from the nutrients it pulls from the water. There are no other sources for it to get anything from.

In the case of mangroves in mud the mangroves could be pulling the nutrients from the mud. In this case the question becomes of how much value are they? I truelly don't know the answer to it. There is a whole other part of this and that becomes do the mangroves add something of value to the water? I don't know the answer to this either.

The biggest problem is I am an engineer and we are always looking for proof. In a case like this the data is hard to find :debi:

The one thing they do add is apart from the water is they look nice.

Joe

From one eng to another. Conduct an experiment and put lots of mangroves in a regular sand bed and compare results

I am just starting a large run of trees with no medium just the reef water tricking by. I will share those results as they unfold
(the trees are suspended in the water via plant tape to a pvc pipe)

i only come on once in a while now, mostly because my tank was shut down and sold. but i have to keep coming back once in a while to check on this. everything is beautiful, i love what you guys created!

Peter, you said you are planning an upgrade to your fish room. I do not know if you have talked to Orphek lately? There are a lot of great upgrades in the pipeline. One thing they did for me, I did not want to have to program 8 control boxes so they made a system that can be controlled from my apex controller. Now I can set sunrises midday, sunsets & night viewing all from my computer.

Thank you very much for that Captngreg. I have 27 boxes over the display tank and another 7 in the fish room with 6 more to be added over the new coral tanks....this would be really terrific to combine the management into one system instead of programming 40 individual controllers. That might even give me more time to update this thread.

Just an update to let you know that the newest video chapter, Episode 4, is now available in Peter's Phanfare album and on YouTube. This episode allows those who couldn't attend the Open House on October 21st in person to join Peter on a guided tour of the tank and fishroom.

For a guy who spent the day in a chair with a broken ankle with his camera beside him I think Rob did a pretty good job of this video. ;)

Enjoy!

I have been out of the hobby for a couple of years and currently going into it again. Currently on the planning stages of my new system. This thread has been very informative and valuable for me. Im very thankful for you taking the time to explain every detail of your system.

A Big Thank You

A Big Thank You

DaveM. Thank you very much for all the help in making this available to our community. This continues to be supported by members of the forum and we all benefit from your efforts.

Rob Baxter did a great job on this video and I am looking forward to the feedback to help us with the next one. Thanks very much Rob. Now the folks who couldn't be there for the tour can get a feeling for the experience thanks to your efforts.

I also have to thank Mr. Wilson for supplying all the food and helping with the hosting duties. His competence in this domain continues to be unmatched in my two years of experience working with him on this project.

We are in the middle of making some significant changes in the fish room so stay tuned for more excitement........
