Peter,
I will be down at MACNA in Orlando and we have a whole group from Atlanta going down as well. Hope to see you there!

I might be able to organize something for the members of this community(thread). Sort of a thank you for hanging in and making this place such a positive experience for all. It will be great to have Atlanta represented........

Hope to see you there ebonline.

Does the Bentley have a rumble seat? Otherwise I can drive down one of your more sporty models so you can have it for the beach :)

A group of reefers from MAST (Marine Aquarium Society of Toronto) chartered a bus to the last MACNA in Atlantic City.

I've never gone to MACNA but I'm hoping to make it this year. I'll be the one in the Wilson shirt. Be sure to say hi.

We may all be wearing Wilson's shirts. On that subject I have been meaning to ask.........what is the derivation of "Mr. Wilson", is it Dennis the Menace or the man behind the fence on Tool Time? Ironically, either would work I think.

Actually it will make a great venue to launch the book...........I can see it now............

Sitting on a small stool behind a TV table sits Mr. Wilson with a sign taped to the front................Hand scribbled, it says....

Autographs 5 cents.

Psychiatric counseling free with grain of salt!!!

This could be very very good Mr. Wilson, very good.

Peter

ok how about some pictures here , don't think that you are going to get away with a full page of being a chatty Cathy here MR 1350 gal :spin2::wavehand:

Well... if I say Dennis the menace that would make you...?

If you like my Wilson shirts, you'll love my Wilson balls. Here's how I see you (Peter) after the second day of seminars and new product introductions at MACNA... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ6D919dm7A&feature=related

I went to MANCA 2 years ago very nice and if you stick around on the last day lots of freebies vendors do not want to take back with them.

Excellent idea abyall...........spare copies of Mr. Wilson's new book......there's incentive to hang around.

Oh right, I would have included that possibility but I had more votes for the other two in the tribal council. If its any consolation Mr. Wilson, no one has tried to vote you off the island yet...........

My new avatar makes it easy to kick me off the island.

I figured this chatter would only last for so long before the demands would start rolling in. So here's what's happening right now.....today.

The glass panels for the 4 interior wrought iron doors are arriving and will be set with silicon for 24hrs before being remounted in place. I'll put a pic up by the weekend.

The custom glass panel for the window into the fish room will be mounted today (I hope). It is extra thick to maintain the acoustic sound barrier I have worked so hard to maintain.

Custom wrought iron braces (with the fish design) are being mounted under the granite sidebar in the wine tasting area. More pics by the weekend.

I am in the middle of a total refresh of my home theater and a team are here mounting various satellite dishes and additional wiring for multimedia distribution around the house. There is a lot of work going on in the theater itself but that is another build thread. This is a subject I know a great deal about and I have intentionally kept it out of this discussion for fear of too much cross contamination. Pics will come after the coral is set and the fish are all tucked in.

Cabinets and various storage racks are being installed in the various storage rooms for the next three days.

The fish room equipment is being disassembled and removed to allow the electricians and plumbers to finish the interior work before the second closed loop system is set up and installed on Monday and Tuesday. Additional plumbing will be completed under the main display tank by Tuesday.

The last water change for the live rock has been completed and I must say it is looking very good. It's been almost seven weeks and the water is very clear and sweet. There are sponges that are healthy and colourful. I cleaned the skimmers last night and managed to complete that task with only half the contents spilling all over me. I must say that setting the skimmer levels after cleaning is a very demanding art form that I have yet to master with ease. I know it's second nature for the majority of members of this thread but I'm still struggling with this one.

There's a lot more 'stuff' going on but I won't bore you with it except to say that the gardens this year are the best they have ever been.

There's always work to be done on a millionairium.

One thing I would like to tackle with a reef book is bridging the gap between theory and practice, scientist and hobbyist. I lay somewhere in the middle and hopefully we all get along.

I was thinking of adding footnotes that could be linked to video and further discussions. Maybe Peter can help me with the technical aspect of that. I would also like to directly include the reef keeping community, especially people who like to tinker and experiment and have the resources to do so. I set out a few brief examples of hair brained ideas that I feel are worthy of further exploration in this post http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17217015&postcount=300

If you are up to it, you can try out some of the ideas on your own or we can figure out how we can all pool our resources as a group and somehow get empirical data with some semblance of a control on the experiment. Peter is probably in the best position to host some tests with his elaborate fish room. Having access to accurate testing equipment is also an asset.

There are a few formulas around for pump flow rates and plumbing drain rates if you are gifted at math, but real world numbers like the ones for automobile fuel consumption carry a lot more weight with me. If we could pool our numbers we can put compare them for some user friendly rule of thumb charts.

Too often we try three things (chemicals, products, methods etc.) at once, not knowing what the impact is of each, or if we did it right - for long enough - or for too long for that matter. Much of the information we have in this hobby is trial and error and loosely based theories. It would be nice to tie up some of the loose ends so we know once and for all if carbon works better in a fluidized bed reactor or if deep sand beds really need to be deep. We can leave the technical stuff like "what is detritus and skimmer sludge comprised of?" to the scientists with access to labs and R&D grants.

I'm not talking about bona fide experiments that live up to scientific scrutiny. Just simple tests that fulfill our requirements as hobbyists that something does what the manufacturers claim. If we do a good job on it, we can hit up some sponsors for freebies for bata testing. We have an immense data base here at RC. We just need a way to disseminate the information, but on a forum it can be hard to qualify the source of the information. We need to organize and compile info to discern the good from the bad. We need a way to separate the wheat from the... not so wheat :)

The ATS (algae turf scrubber) threads got out of control once a manufacturer started blindly feeding his "information" into them. It made it impossible to distinguish "good" information from "bad". I think we can fine tune our technology and methodology and advance our hobby with a little help from our other ology friend, biology.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm well ok then I will let it slide just this once Peter.

Thanks asmodeus, there is one brief update to the update. The glass guys think they might not have to take the wrought iron doors down......thats a good thing. Also there are 12 guys working on stuff. Three electricians just showed up. There is a second generator going in as well. The first one can't handle the requirements for the aquarium and fish room, never mind the house. We decided not to trash the first one to upgrade to a larger unit as the result is much more industrial in size, noise and maintenance. So now I have 34,000 watts with 120 amps of back up power for the aquarium. The max downtime will be 45 sec's. I have to get a new Natural gas meter and we are away to the races!!!!!

Mr. Wilson - I couldn't agree more. For those of us newbees (just started in 2008 so I still consider myself a newbee) without a scientific bone in our body, that type of practical information would be extremely helpful and would eliminate some of the frustration. There are many of us willing to try this hobby and have the desire to do so responsibly but need the wisdom and guidance to the extent you talk about.

Nineball - I have been following your thread from the beginning (and as a result reviewed ChingChai's as well) and without a doubt the information learned here has been more helpful just in the last couple of months than what I learned over the last two years. Thank you and keep up the good work! p.s. I'm only about an 1 3/4 hours away from Orlando so I may decide to go as well. If so, I hope to see you there!

Mr. Wilson, regarding your comments on current writting either being way too tech or take your fish bowl and fill it with water then add fish" LOL; I could not agree more

Despite being a bit more up on the tech side of the scale than the average keeper, I hate having wade through that to get to the meat of what I want to know.

For example: If I am researching adding ozone to my reef; its ok to know how it forms in nature but I would really rather get to the part where a fellow reef keeper says "... here is my set up, how I dose the ozone, and what it has done for me..." Here is what can happen if you mess it up and why

not a five page listing of all of the intermediate chemical reactions as ozone enters the tank. a simple footnote directing me to a research source if I need to know more is plenty enough. Suggestions like many ozone users dump the ozone into their skimmer then directly into a large carbon reactor: That is helpful to know. Lightening being a natural producer of ozone less helpful LOL

sign me up for a first edition of this book as well

Count me in Mr. Wilson. This is the kind of stuff I hoped would happen. We should be able, I hope to take a stab at describing the basic essentials for reefkeeping and provide a disciplined logical framework for folks to continue to update and refine data over time. I do agree with you however that some sort of review process needs to happen to keep inappropriate bias from contaminating the results. Perhaps we can come up with a suggested list of testing equipment that will help us lay the groundwork. I'm sure that after I explain to my wife why a volleyball took over her storage area that I will have an opportunity to 'live like tiger' ...................the only difference between me and him is my golf is terrible.
