Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank)

I'm thinking Peter could issue some line drawings of what is happening currently with this build. We can each of us then print these off and colour them in. I don't know if a competition would be in order of the results, but it would certainly keep us occupied until further pics become available. :)

Before any one starts colouring...........Mike just called and the second chiller is in and he asked if we could work on the tank this afternoon. If there are no surprises I will be doing an update (pics) tonight with the equipment put back into the fish room and perhaps the final setup for a fresh water system test.

My next door neighbour has just put in a small tank around 300 gal and I gave him some of my live rock. The rock looks incredible and the colours are phenomenal. I am very much looking forward to aquascaping my tank.

Thanks for your patience everyone. It looks like we are finally going to get some traction.:bigeyes::dance:

Yeah "small tank" hahaha i wish i had a "small tank" that size. but i guess compared to yours it is small...lol:lol2: cant wait for the pics.

Damm a small tank and i just gave him some rock!!!!!!!!!! Oh ya its only a 300!!!!!!!!!!! Those are words I hear in my dream!!!! That borders on the line with whats ok to say on a family forum (reef porn again) like this one, so lets keep this civil please. :)

We're talking about a variety of variables that all intertwine. If the question is "what temperature should I keep the coral at?", then the answer is 84F. If the question is "what temperature should I keep my tank at?", then the answer may differ.

It's possible that more nuisance algae would grow at a higher temp. It's also possible that there is less dissolved oxygen, but I think the difference between 76F and 84F is negligible with regard to oxygen saturation. My point about flow rates earlier was simply a warning that if you have a problematic tank with inadequate flow then you don't have room for higher temps.

Fish are more active at a higher temp. They eat more and grow faster. They would not have a problem at 84F as this is what they experience in their natural habitat.

The point that Ronald Shimek is making is that it is foolish to keep the temp at the absolute bottom of the safety zone.

I just visited a very nice 1350 gallon reef tank at Shotank in Chicago today. I looked at his thermometer and it read 84F. He says it goes down to 76 in the winter. I should have asked which season the tank grows better. The tank doesn't have a chiller. I didn't ask about a heater.

I decided to ask the author of the referenced article, Ron Shimek, what temperature he recommends for a reef tank given the information presented in his article. He stated 82-84 deg F.

As I said, I've had more success at cooler temperatures and I don't know of anyone keeping their reef tanks this warm on average, except maybe Mr Wilson

HOWEVER, his argument is a good one, so I am going to slowly warm my reef to an average of 82 deg F

Sometimes popular wisdom is just that, popular, but doesn't make it right. :D

I like to see some pic of the 1350 gallon if you or yhe reefer have any. Do this reefer has a thread or a website to visit?

Shotank is a LFS in the Chicagoland area. There was a thread that had some pics while it was starting to be built and I can see if I can locate it later.

Here it is...........with some questions at the end..

Here it is...........with some questions at the end..

I'm going to give the members of this community a pictorial update and ask for everyone's benefit that we try and NOT have fifty repeated copies of the same thing if possible. I'm going to try and make short text observations in between each picture section so that we can avoid making this thread any longer than it needs to be. Comments are very welcome...............

Before and After

Before and After

This as most will remember was the fish room equipment temporarily stored in the wine tasting area.............there has not been too much wine tasting as a result.

This is what the wine tasting area looked like after the equipment went into the fish room...............there will be wine tasting next week!!!

Yeah I find it annoying when people reply with a quote, and include the original pictures, then you end up with 3 pages of the same pictures... Grrr!!

Looking forward to some pictures!!

And now the detail..........

And now the detail..........

This will take a bit of time to copy this stuff over..........but the intent is to record the building blocks for later discussion. Please note if you are responding to these that I will have my head down in the pics till I'm finished.

the new platform for the second chiller..........and for those with an eye for detail this chiller is as powerful as the original but smaller in size. It is designed for a commercial setting. Also we will be going from the back to the front.............

Cheers, Peter! You don't half deliver! Looks like a lot of work got done today.

Now, if I could only get these crayon marks off my PC monitor ...
