Holy Mac

I've stumbled upon this thread a couple of days ago, & have to chime in here, This is truly an awesome setup, the level of detail is incredible. It took me a couple of days to get thru this, my brain hurts:fun5:
I just wanted to suggest a method I have used to rid nuisance hitch hikers from fresh LR if it's not too late, I had issue with mantis shrimps, I have tried the fresh water, high salinity with no success, I've also tried to bate & capture them with no success. What did work & you won't believe this, drum roll please! is a car battery to shock the rock, just be careful not to shock yourself, a few seconds & all kinds of stuff come jumping out!

Peter, you need to design a specialized electric chair for each rock. Or just toss a TV in the live rock vat :wildone:

i've read somewhere on reefcentral that pouring club soda into the holes in the rock make the mantis go bonkers and they run out of the rock, haven't tried it yet, but i do have a mantis i need to get out soon.... any input from the pros on this thread??

Bicarbonate of soda (soda water/club soda) sounds plausible. It's reef safe and dissipates readily. It's man affect on saltwater is lowering PH. I don't know if the lower PH or the bubbles bother the shrimp, but the idea has merit.

Finding the rock with the mantis is the hard part. If you leave the rock out of water suspended over a bucket of saltwater, the shrimp should jump ship within 24 hours.

I have heard from a reliable source that microwaving rock with aiptasia for 30 seconds will kill the anemones with no damage to coraline algae. Any living organism with water in it will die as the molecules get excited and boil. I'm sure it works on shrimp too, but you have to get the cocktail sauce just right.

I always keep my tank at 1.025. I realize the ocean is 1.026 but the ocean does not account for evaporation etc so I keep mine there. This way a little evaporation or a miscalculation in adding new water etc. It gives me a little buffer for error. To drop my tank below 1.022 from 1.025 would require a complete brain failure. As would going over 1.027.

In order for this to work well make sure you are using a nuker with a rotating platter. The ones that just stay still don't actually nuke evenly, so you want it to keep moving to make sure you get thorough coverage of the whole rock.

WOW have we really come to this???? I can only imagine what my wife would say. She already yells at me when I use her nice towels to quickly clean up spilled salt water on the harwood. When she sees some frozen krill in the freezer exposed on top of some steaks. When the laundry room smells like $hit because I left the skimmer cup in laundry for a few minutes uncleaned while I do a wc. I can't even imagine her reaction when she comes down to make some popcorn and there is a bloody 15lb piece of dripping live rock in the microwave. I actually think she would throw it at the tank and smash it then my fate would be :uzi:

Joes juice works fine, it will save you the :uzi:

UUUMMM is everything OK ???? This sudden stop in posting in the past has meant big problems

Maybe Peter is doing some of the interviews for Tank Room Girl. I mean all of us would understand if he took a day away from RC in order to interview and select the "oh so perfect canidate"

I mean what with the high heel ladder test....
The Bentley waxing exhibition....
Wine room stewardship lessons....
Husbandry.......

not too mention all the other stuff we would come up with.

Maybe some pictures of the application/selection process will be forthcoming...if not, maybe we'll at least get an update on tank/equipment room progress.....hey, I'm good with either!

The humor in the last few pages is great glad i subscribed to this thread. Cheers to peter for making this all possible with his big dreams and forthcoming realities

Well, you are close but no cigar..............:lol2:

The 'Ladder test" has very much been on my mind of late, but I am finding it difficult to concentrate with all the activity going on here. I am not going to go into all the detail in this post but you can expect a deluge of information in the very near future. I promised a short while ago that this build was going to take off in a major way and I can tell you that the commitment will be kept.

In the meantime...........Yesterday morning I got up around 8 am EST to find 18 guys in various locations around the house. Four Home Theater guys working on the media room refresh, Four electricians working on the second generator for the fish room as well as five guys working on the garage refit and the newly discovered storage room above the garage. I needed the extra storage space because I had just stolen the storage space beside the fish room to accommodate the fish room expansion (sorry, I forgot to mention that earlier but as you can imagine it has been a politically sensitive subject in this household). The 'Brothers Grimm' and coworkers(four of them) plus a supervisor were there to help empty and move the mars bars to the new location. The fish room expansion has brought its own set of tasks to ensure electrical, plumbing and HVAC/HRV/lighting and drainage have been adequately planned. At the peak of the activity around noon when John from DQI arrived with his helper we had 20 men circling various locations around the house. My wife was so happy with all this activity after a year of it already in the bag. Then the police arrived! It seems that the 20 guys working on my house and the 12 guys working on my next door neighbours reno all came in their own cars or trucks (some with trailers) and made it challenging for anyone driving down my street. I live on a cul de sac but apparently the law says that you have to be able to turn a firetruck around the circle without bumping into another vehicle. One of the folks who live in my neighbourhood complained so we had to stop everything and move 32 cars to a safe location. Meanwhile Molly, (my female sheltie) is running around trying to bond and flirt with all these men wandering through the house. It was almost a full time job keeping that busy inquisitive nose out of the sawdust, paint cans and various leather toolkits with all the commotion. Then I had to attend two board meetings from 4:00 to midnight which also brought more joy into my wife's quest for peace and stability. So yes, yesterday was somewhat distracting..................

'Ladder Tests' have quite a strong appeal at the moment..........

Right Antonais, I'm beginning to think that medication for the homeowner should be a part of every aquarium build!

All the cracked stuff is being replaced as we speak.

Peter

Hello Peter,

I just have to take a second to commend you on your poise and patience through this whole journey...

To think that a crack in a sump and a "faulty" external pump could result in an addition to the tank room and additional further steps implemented for troubleshooting is truly impressive!

You really teach all of us a valuable lesson in regards to patience and for that I thank you.

Patrick

I'm sure this has already been talked about, but I can't seem to find the information amoung all of the pages. Peter, can you tell me how you are producing all of your RO water.

Thanks!

What's really funny is that Peter still has no idea that the need for the new hangar complex or the carrier fleet has already begun. ;)
