I'll keep the onlookers in the loop and post my update for Peter here.

UPS came today with the ozonizer, but I was out. I will stay home tomorrow until it comes to make sure it doesn't get shipped back :)

Leng Sy is moving so he wants to ship the mud now. I gave him the green light, so it will be shipped Thursday direct to your place.

I sent off a request for a quote on the mangrove walls to another acrylic guy. We should hear back from them tomorrow.

I ordered 100 tubes of Epo Putty. I'll let you know when they ship.

What's the plan with the aquarium controller? It doesn't look like Vertex will have their controller any time soon. There's nothing wrong with Profilux http://www.aquariumcomputer.com/System__E_/Products/Controller/ProfiLux_3_eX/profilux_3_ex.html

Have you ever heard of elos.........Chingchai speaks very highly of it.

Maintenance Team update

Maintenance Team update

hello everyone,
just a quick update on some recent progress.

planning along with diagrams of the rock formations have commenced. :bounce3: Epo Putty has been ordered, and throughout the duration of the next week we will be bringing the tank/ subaqariums to life. :fish1: that is of course with the help of some fine tuning to our plumbing system from Mr Wilson.

As im sure all of you are extremely anxious to see what kind of landscaping we have in store, unfortunately you will have to wait a little longer. :sad2:
on a good note we have boosted into lightspeed so expect some rapid movement to come

hey Mr Wilson, on the remote DSB for the overflows, got anymore info on doing this? I've been thinking about setting up a RDSB for my 180 (in wall) and saw what you did there with the overflows, would that work with my setup?

this is a very old pic a few years ago, but you can see both overflows are easily accessible via my fish room....thanks!

Fill'm up! Just leave some room at the top so sand doesn't go down the drain. Do the L x W X H ÷ 231 = US Gallons to calculate how much sand you have/need. You will be surprised how much of a deep sand bed you can have without spending any resources. If you ever need to remove it, you can use wet vac (shop vac). Now if a fish makes into the box you don't have to reach far to get him. The same is true of general maintenance, as you will no longer have pools of detritus collecting at the bottom of the overflow box. The drains continue to function as if the sand wasn't there.

Elos has a nice line of slick products, but their aquarium controller lacks many of the features that Profilux has. I don't believe it has a Blackberry/Iphone feature. That's a big one in the toy box. GHL (Profilux) has been persistent in adding new features over the past few years. This is a weak spot with some other venders who build it and hit a plateau. The only things I'm not crazy about are the poorly written/translated instructions and the small screen and confusing buttons. It's a lot easier when you have it plugged into a PC.

Jamie and his crew were painting the "sled" (filtration platform) today with two-part polyurethane paint so the fumes may have given them some psychedelic rock formation ideas :wildone:

This kind of paint is almost bulletproof. It's usually marketed as "epoxy paint" but there is no such thing. Epoxy is clear resin with no pigment. It's the same stuff you would use to seal a plywood tank so there's no way it's chipping off of out sled. http://www.rayplex.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jmmokodrk

Mr.Wilson, more information on the Remote Deep Sand Bed in the Overflow, please:

1). Are the stand pipes/drains full of holes, or are they solid, like with a Durso-style drain?

2). How far should the sand be kept away from the opening of the mouth of the drain pipes?

3). Do you have any recommendations for sand type and grain size for deep sand beds like this?

Thx muchly,

Dave.M

This I agree with 100%. While I'm a big fan of Elos, I don't think the Biotopus is as developed a product as Profilux.

Hello all, I feel like I'm cheating because I am still on page 105 after reading for days but I just feel the need to say a few things and ask a elementary question. For every one who has been pushing Peter for water in the tank/fish in the tank etc. all i can say is thank God non of you had to endure what my wife and daughter went through it took me 3 years before I placed any sps in my tank. I started with softies and after I knew I could keep them happy I added some fish then lps more time then sps my poor wife waited nearly 7 months to get her fish (she doesn't get corals, not really an aquarium without fish).

I have been reading forums here and at Marine
Depot for years (learn more by keeping my mouth shut and ears open) and I am amazed at how warm, kind and helpful everyone is to complete strangers, from all over the world. All I can say is Hello my name is Mike and I'm proud to me a reefer.

Now my stupid question almost every forum on tank builds a frag tank is part of the build and it is usually plumed into the same system has the Dt,so I do not understand the reason for the frag tank, why not put the frag back in the
Dt and let it grow where its going to end up any way?
Thanks Peter for letting me share in one hell of an epic journey.

To be honest, I am the very low-tech guy.
This kind of equipment is out of my interest.
Watching and observing livestocks in the display tank is my most concern.
I hardly take a look of the water parameter on the controller.
So I've never studied much about them.
Anyway, Elos is still the best. I guess.:p

Seems the decision was already made to use epoxy putty but I don't like the stuff. I really prefer to use a cement based product like Korallenzucht Speedglue (but we have several similar cheaper products available at our side of the ocean) as it develops a faster and better microfilm on which corals and coralline algae grow much faster and better. So it may look grey and dull at first but it won't stay grey (or pink) for as long as putty.

Apologize to peter for the hijack :)

very cool, I need to do some research on DSB's (I had in the past). I use both standpipes as intakes, one of the standpipes is the "standard" AGA megaflow standpipes:

the strainer comes very low down, so will limit the mount of sand I can put in, oh well.

so my followup question, the outside of the boxes are clear glass, I would suspect I need to cover these with either paint or a tack on material that blackens the compartments? I already have cut out pieces of black acrylic covering the tops of the boxes (cuts down on noise, splashing and algae growth in the boxes).

Thanks!

24 hours that a record. lol.

You take your eye of the "Ball" to send a post? :blown:

Fantastic Project with a great Project Director ! ! !

Thank you both and you are right......there is a lot happening at the moment.

In some ways I think I am getting a crash (oops bad choice of words in this group!) course in how to cope when by all accounts and visual cues we are back at the beginning of this project. The fish room is virtually empty of equipment except for the mars bars. The equipment is spread all around the lower foyer which is making my wife so very very happy at the moment. There are a bunch of tile guys redoing parts of the fish room floor and blending the walls from the old room to the new expanded floor plan. Pictures will be soon............

Meanwhile, we have taken ALL the plumbing, in, over and under the tank apart and gone back to the basics taking into account all the concerns raised in this thread as well as flow experts who have listened to my long winded explanations as to what we are trying to accomplish. We have even re-examined the equipment in light of a new and improved flow architecture. We are changing a number of the pumps (5 of them to be exact) to Abyzz 400W brushless DC pumps with a proprietary controller capable of controlling up to eight pumps in a coordinated fashion. The open system has also been reconfigured to provide much better circulation in the display tank and better effectiveness in the various water quality processing coming off the sled.

We are starting to look at lighting with some real world tests in the empty tank to establish a performance baseline on a variety of lights and light configurations. I can tell you that we got some surprises that none of us expected. There will be a great deal more soon on this subject. We are beginning to bring in some decent technology to measure and quantify our results for everyone's benefit.

The reef crystal supply line has been set up to initialize the mars bars and display tank. We have also washed our aconite sand with a cement mixer and put it into the vats to season with our healthy live rock. We have put in a regulator to ensure that the feed to our two RO/DI units is at 75 deg F to maximize the efficiency of water production.

The Bros. Grimm have drafted up detailed sketches of the overall plan for the Display Tank aquascuplture representing the styles for the Four Grand Masters. The four styles are................ Cloud Mountain, Canyon, English Country Garden and Bonsai. I will be announcing the selected Grand Masters in two weeks.

We have decided to bite the bullet and initialize the system with the profilux 3 EX controller with all the bells and whistles. This will get us started and we will be adding additional equipment when circumstances dictate.

Due to the equipment changes in the fish room we will be reviewing the electrical layout and amending it accordingly. Hopefully my electrician will be available by satellite phone in his new three masted schooner on his round the world excursion now that he can afford it!!!!

We have submitted the drawings for the mangrove acrylic hydroponic miracle mud experimental farm to two suppliers and are waiting on the responses which we hope to get in the next couple of days.

Mr Wilson has informed me that the sac of spare parts is getting smaller which is a clear indicator of progress. I must say that working with Mr. Wilson has been a real benefit to my learning curve and that of the whole team. We are surrounded by computers linked to the web, manuals from an extensive warchest of experience, phone and email links to some of the best resources in the business and an array of equipment that I'm sure will take me a lifetime to feel comfortable with.

There will be food soon enough for the picture hounds out there. I'm holding out this time as I believe that the mess is familiar stuff to you all and its time we get to the meat of this project with finished products to be put on display. So pictures soon...........when we are ready to move on to the next phase.

Peter on behalf of the 'team'.

There is nothing like planning out a tank and then just when you think you are almost done realize you need to change a ton of stuff and you have to redo the whole thing all over again. The main difference with your tank is because it is so big the change over is oh so much bigger!!

Hopefully this is the last change you have to make but I have a feeling that before you get coral in there there might be another change or at least some fine tuning to be done.

I would say good luck but with the people you have around you doing the job, I think you are in great hands.

Loking forward to the updated pictures.

Cheers!!

Pat
