Coral Wants..... A Fireside Chat

Just thought....

It might be a good idea to let others know what kinds of corals we are on the look out for. Maybe someone in the club might have it to trade or maybe a bunch will go in on a buy. Corals are scarce around here in the shops, I think as a club we could perhaps band together.... sort of help each other out. I have talked to Ron about starting a registry of corals that people are keeping currently and corals that have been kept in the past. It doesn't really matter if it was killed or sold it's the husbandry techniques we are looking for. We want to learn from our mistakes.

So this thread can serve at least 2 purposes:

1. A registry of current livestock/history for the purposes of possible trading of info, ie. husbandry, behavior and good ole' acquisition, trading, bartering and swapping.

2. A registry of past livestock/history for the purpose learning from our success's and mistakes to help make a consensus of care for future acquisitions.

This is an attempt to return to the "Grassroots" if you will, that I have been hearing so much about. Everyone helping each other out. Sharing info and ideas with the goal of proper husbandry and captive propagation. Hmmmm, sounds vaguely like a mission statement.

I think it is important to share the stories we have to tell and anyone that is "worth their salt" will have a few experiences to share.......... so grab your laptop, some hot chocolate and come sit by the fire and tell us your story..................

well now which should I buy first the fireplace to sit buy the laptop or the hot chocolate.

nope don't even have hot chocolate in the house. Just coffee and cappachino(sp) it has been a long long week.

well off to paint I guess, LOL. No seriously if I ever get this dang stand done then perhaps I will hunt the old photo's of my corals and some history to go with them.

Great idea! It would be nice to have a 'local registry' of corals past and present.

I have never felt like I could contribute to the local frag sales or swaps because all that I have ever bought has been from Phil or Ron, therefore, I could not offer them anything they would want to 'swap' with.

Also, to hear the wish list of all will be amazing. However, I am personally drawn to those colorful LPS.

Also, in this registry, could we have anyone local who is or has attempted (successful or not) breeding fish...............

Maybe but then again how do you know for sure it is what you were told it is? If we order from a reputable business such as Atlantis we are guaranteed to get the real deal.

I don't see why not

However it will have to go on our local site as we need full control to modify and add content (data), we can not do that here. If this is something everyone agrees on it can be set up.

I think it's a great idea to put together a database of what we have around the area and how the corals have faired. That way we have something to reference if we are thinking about a particular coral. We could see who has/had it and if they were successful with it and may even have a frag that would save us having it shipped cross country.

I'm not talking about the give away coral Ron.... I am talking about people getting together with similar interests to swap and maybe buy stuff together....... not a "group buy" in the sense that it has been used in the past......... like the refracs...... Just like 3 guys or gals getting together to get some frags and share the box charges, or swap corals between themselves because the all like Softies.................. Promoting "Community"

You will find the "Coral Care Database" under "Basics" on our Official forum.

We already have a board to post your wanted lists for others to see as well as a board to sell/trade your frags to other member.

It is on the Official chemicalvalleyreefclub forum look under: Aquacultured Coral/Livestock.

Have fun

yep, most people around here really don't have a need for it (yet), they get there coral at the swaps or LFSs but it is there and can be accessed and used by any CVRC member thats interested. I have a feeling after the waiting list goes public traffic will increase dramatically over there.

hey phil, how long has it taken that chips acro to develop into a colony like that???
Mine seems to be a slow grower

I have had mine for about a year. I changed to higher K bulbs a while back and now it looks awesome. It has a green base with bluish purple tips.

Just picked up a load of coral frags including A. Suhasonai, A. Formosa, A. Granulosa, A. Samentosa, Purple and Lime Porities, A. Loripes, A. Undata, A. Efflorescens, A. Tenuis, A. Caroliniana, A. Jacquelineae, A. Lokani, Some tri-color milli red/green polyps/blue tips and a few other mystery corals. Woo Hoo, it feels like Christmas!!!

Where did you order them from, I am thinking about putting in an order if I can find some real outstanding stuff.
