Coral, what should I start with?

Ok the 72 is all setup and running well, I want to start adding coral but I want to go slow and easy.,,,, Where is a good place to start?


72g Bowfront

30G sump

Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrate 0PPM (or close enough)
Calcium 300 if I did the test right....
Only 60 LBS of live rock and 30 lbs of rubble in the sump.
2 175W Metal Halide Lights 10k atinic
1 Prizm pro skimmer (Needs to be upgraded) but working well
1 Blonde Naso tang
1 Yellow tang
1 Clown
1 fire Shrimp
2 peppermint shrimp
3 Emerald Crab
1 Sleeper Goby
1 LTA Anenome

Only thing I want to add is a clam

Ive been told one of the Tangs will have to go but for now they are staying.

I would start with soft corals, zoos, mushrooms and no SPS.

bali green slimer [ac. yongeii], montiporas of varying types, pocillopora, milleporas. Maybe try one of the other acroporas like ac. aculeus, or ac. valida, which are hardy. Start monitoring your calcium and alkalinity levels just about daily. If you want stonies, stay to stonies: you can also have lps like frogspawn and hammer. Stonies and softies don't mix well, because of alleleopathy---softies spit chemicals that clear their area of stonies. That anemone is likely to cause trouble, too: if it wanders or gets into a bad mood it can take out your stonies.

Softies = easier and grows faster
Stonies = harder and grows slower

Most people start with softies until they know they're doing things right and some will slowly swap out corals for LPS and SPS because they want to try different things.

my first was a kenya tree, and i dont think i could kill it if i tried. It recently dropped a bunch of branches if you want a frag.

are there any sites that tell you about coral and their names? Cause you guys thow all of those names out and my head starts to hurt LOL!

The tank itself is just a few weeks old BUT I took over everything (except the sand) from my 55g tank so all in all I did close to a 50% water change by going to a 72g with a 30G sump. I have not had an ammonia spike of any kind.

Hi Bob--good site you found! Don't worry too much about the names--in no time at all you'll be slinging them like the rest of us .

Take everyone up on their offer of frags--it's a great way to meet people, get hooked into a nice network, and start populating your tank inexpensively. And then, go to the meeting for the auction--its a super way to net some really nice corals too.
