I'm not sure how CSS compares to ASM as I don't have any experience with the latter. I recently got a CSS from a guy tearing down his tank. For now, I have it running in my sump next to my EuroReef.
I'm impressed with how the CSS performs. The CSS is a bit sensitive, say to water changes, but It hasn't acted up during feeding time like some skimmers do.
If you've burned your eyes reading through the entire CSS thread, you should be given an award. But there is a lot of info in there, and a number of mods some people are doing to increase skimmer performance - I really don't have a need for those, yet anyway.
If anyone has ASM-CSS comparisons, that would be interesting.
I'm guessing though that a dedicated in-sump skimmer like ASM would have an edge over the CSS though - but that's just speculation.
I have the CSS 220. No mods. After a three day break inthe skimmer is very good out of the box. I believe it to be easy to control with the "red knob" even though some insist on modding it. If you want a catalog number for drsfosterandsmith.com I can give it to you. This number will take the 220 from 169 down to 151.
i have one rated for a 125g but im using it on my 30 G nano...i'm superbly impressed with its performance. The red knob can be a bit difficult to adjust but you'll get used to it..just watch it for awhile after you dial it as it might overflood.
