coralline algae

I just started my tank about a month ago and put live rock in 2 weeks ago. I have some algae growing but not coralline. Should i worry or wait it out? I have some blue leg hermits and yellow tail damsels to help boost the nitrogen cycle.

Coraline can take a month or 2 before it starts to appear. If you need to give your "cycle" a boost, just dump a bit of fish food in the water. The bacteria simply need some bio matter to work on, not a fish :)

buy a rock w/coraline, scrape it and put in the tank. Dose Mg or just buy some 2 part calcium/buffer aditive and it will take right off, then you'll be scraping your glass daily cursing the day you ever wanted this stuff in your tank.

thanks, i dose my tank with kent marine essential elements once a week, and i read in one of my books that adding a couple hardy fishes can help to boost things, but thanks

It took about 3 months for the LRs toget the coralline but once it started on the rocks so did the glass and what a PITA to get it off.

Using fish is old school pet store sales tactics... Here buy these damsels to start your tank.. etc etc.....

A bit of fish food will do just as much and if you feel that is not adequate, a dead raw shrimp will add the bioload of a school of fishes

Your weekly dosing should be preceded by weekly testing, never add what you are not testing for, it is a sure recipe for trouble if you are not testing for elements you are dumping in the tank. Items like Iodine become toxic pretty quickly after they go past the "beneficial" level. Dosing Magnesium or other items is no less helpful if your tank is not in need, it is a waste of money as well.

Nothing good happens fast in this hobby for sure...

Hey buddy.. Dont worry. There will come a time where you will look at coraline as a nuisance to deal with (cleaning it off the glass).

Enjoy your clean tank :)
