coralline question........

Why is it that the little bit of coralline I do manage to get, isn't colorful at all, until I do a water change, then, whatever was towards the top of the tank that get exposed to air, gets brilliant in color when the water is filled back up???? Then it looks light the bright pink that I usually see in peoples tanks?

Without making another long post about my issues, could this also be due to low nutrients? Big 3 are calcium 440, alk 9.6, mag 1350

I guess I'm just wondering is why does it look great in the spots that have been exposed to air?

well that sucks!!! ha ha

How do I get the bright coralline I see in nice tanks???

I know, careful what you wish for type thing, as I found out with the Xenia, if anyone saw my last thread!!! But would like to have nice coralline.........

As I'm over 10 years into SW, and at least 3 years in my attempt at corals, when will it come???? Did have parameter issues for a while, been fairly stable for the last few years:(

Starting to think I'll never get the reef thing figured out!!!!!

Does coralline relate to corals in the need for nutrients also in the water column, or just stable parameters?

So you already have Coralline algae, but it's just not the right color, correct? Some tanks will have purple, some tanks pink, some red. What shows up is just a roll of the dice IMO. FWIW 99% of what I have is purple, but there are some small patches of red here and there. I really don't think there's anything I could do to change this aside from bringing it in from a different source.

Think each type likes different light and stuff. Plus like the person said before you need to intrude each type into your tank and let nature take is course

Yes, I do have some coralline, but grows VERY slow in both tanks. Color is a very pale purple. Not colorful at all. Just wonder why everyone else has a nice purple/pink color... I tend to think the quantity may be because of the pincushion urchin? But on the other hand the nano grows it at the same rate, and color lacking the same, so maybe it's not the urchin eating it up

I have purple, light purple, green in my tank. Looks great on the bottom of the tank, requires non stop scraping on viewing panes....

There are many different types of coralline algae. Some like bright light, some like lower nanometer levels, ect. You are growing coralline that can grow in your lighting, flow ect. and is limited to what has been imported to the tank.

If you want different types that are more appealing to your eye, go find a few snails/hermits at your local fish store that have those types on their shells and bring them home. As they rub on the rocks in your tank, they'll seed your rock and soon enough you'll be cursing the damn stuff because it grows everywhere all the time.

If you are in a rush to get it going, you can take scrapings from those critters (or rock from another tank), and crush the scrapings up in a mortar/pestle with a little salt water, and then pour the seeded water back into your tank in front of a powerhead. Then find yourself some Alk/Calc supplments and dose slowly until you get up to 400-450ppm. If you do regular water changed with Reef Crystals, that will take you most of the way there with the proper calc levels.

Keep those levels stable, and introduce that seeded algae-water, and it will grow friggin' everywhere.

I was in the same boat. I had the same purple/pink very pale stuff growing and it didnt look good at all. I just went to my lfs, and asked if they could get me some scrapings of different colors, and they happily obliged. I came home with 3 different colors, and introduced them to my tank, and in a few wees it was popping up all over.

I've heard many ppl say it and more ppl say it's a pain to keep up with on the viewing panes. That is true!!

I don't find coralline algae attractive

Neither does nuisance green algae, which is somewhat of the point. Living coralline algae tends to give GHA and bubble algae little chance to get a foothold, literally. No place to root, no place to grow. To each their own to be sure, but I'd rather have coralline algae encrusting on my expensive rocks than Bryopsis.
