Coralline algae in nature helps build the structure of reefs and helps prevent erosion. In the reef tank, some species (such as urchins) eat coralline. As mentioned above, areas of live rock encrusted in coralline algae tend to be relatively free of nuisance algae. Many also find the colors of coralline to be attractive. I do.

i like the colour of coralline on the rocks--will it grow without light--i.e. in a sump?

not without light, just watch your displays CA level once you have alot of coralline, it eats it up!

if i keep an urchin in my sump; with a light, the urchin will remove the coralline off the rocks--so i need to learn more about urchins....what to feed them?
