Has anyone had any luck with a few corals and a mantis?
I just recently came up with a metal halide for my mantis tank while i was reworking my lighting on my big reef, and wanted to put it to good use. The mantis LR is all solid and glued together, so definately not going to roll around. Just wanted to add a few corals to the tops of the rocks and wanted any first hand info on anyones pros and cons with this.
Thanks.

A mantis shrimp is not a mantis shrimp. Different species have very different photic requirments. Some, like Gonodactylus smithii, G. chiragra, G. platysoma and Pseudosquilla ciliata live in the lower intertidal and can handle very bright, broad spectrum white light. Others such as Odontodactylus scyllarus and Hemisquilla ensigera come from deeper or murky water and are far less tolerent of the kind of light a halide puts out.

There are certainly combinations of corals and stomatopods that work well together, but it would be a good idea to do a bit of research on the habitat that your stomatopod comes from just as you would look up the lighting requirements of the corals.

He's a P. ciliata , so like you said, he should tolerate it. Now to come up with corals that will make him feel at home.
