Corals

Hi Randy,

Just wondering if corals grow bacteria on them responsible for removing ammonia? I heard somthing about this.

Do you think that you could replace the rocks in the tank with just pure corlas for hiding spots?

The benefit would be that corals dont trap ditritus, like the pores of live rock does. So you can have better water quality.

Am I nuts! :D

There are bacteria covering most surfaces in an aquarium, including many organism surfaces. But the surface area provided by live corals is much lower than live rock or sand.

Yes, I expect one can keep certain corals as the only thing in an aquarium (plus skimming, etc), but you would be much more limited in terms of fish load.

Randy, I just sucked some dirt out from the bottom of my sump and strained it through a coffee filter. It comes out clear without a yellow color tint to it.

Coffe filters are safe to use? I smell somthing sweet when its wet, but no smell when dry. What do you think the micron size is on a coffee filter?
