Hi Folks,

I am sorry that I haven't been keeping up with this thread or anything on RC for that matter. We have been really busy and I am having a hard time keeping up with RC. I have to try and do a better job...

Dkle,

This piece seems to be forming a table and all the incipient axial corallites are facing upward (and its Green). So with this in mind I believe that this is a A. batunai.

I hope this helps you out a bit.

Chris @ RM

Wentreefgirl,

Beautiful photo and coral!

Unfortunately this piece hasn't grown out enough to show any characteristics that I can use for IDing purposes. The color reminds me of A. valida (Bonzai) but I could easily be wrong. Aren't I a great help? LOL

I you have more bring them on as I will do my best to keep this thread going.

Reef-Daddy,

You are correct in believing that this is a A. cerealis. They are quite distinct in their coloration and shape. For some reason some corals in certain systems encrust before the shoot out any vertical branches. You might want to raise this piece up to get the full purple coloration. When diving in Fiji I usually see these within 10 feet of the surface (which equals 8" to 10" from the water surface in most systems). So I would recommend raising it up to that point...

I hope this helps.

Chris @ RM

Had not checked back in to see this! Thanks!

I recently purchased this wild colony, any ideas as to species?
the tubular corralites remind me of a jacquelinea in size, but they occur differently.

twon8,

Most positively a A. tenuis. There are very few species that have the classic blue tips and the elongated, tubular incipient axial corallite as this one does.

I hope this helps you out,

Chris @ RM

Chris,

even if you are only right 80% of the time, you are still an id genius!

Great corals everyone!

Servo,

I doubt I am correct even that much. That is why most of time I say "I believe". I am just trying to give folks and idea of an ID. I have always thought that "sp." is too vague and we need to have something to go by...

So folks disagree but I will stick by my guns.

But thanks for the compliment.

Chris @ RM

Corn,

Thanks for reposting your photos, it helps quite a bit to see them posted directly on the thread.

1) Looks to me like A. azurea as it has longer, more tubular corallites, plus very thin branches.

2) This stag reminds me of a A. robusta. Dark polyps with blue and aquamarine corallites are signature to this species.

3) I am pretty sure this is A. aculeus. They will always have a very small yellow tipped corallites and grow in a bottlebrush pattern

I hope this helps you out,

Chris

Thanks WentReefGirl, for directing me to this ID thread, and thanks Chris for giving it a stab (Funnily enough, Kevinnap gave me some of these and I believe he got some of them in a frag pack from ReeferMadness:
