Could you combine Calfo's "DSB in a bucket" with your mangroves??

I was trying to think of a way to submerge my mangroves in sand and still have them stick out of the water AND get light. I have an idea for how to accomplish this. Combine the DSB in a bucket and the mangrioves. Maybe fill a bucket 3/4's of the way with sand (can it be crushed coral??), drill tweo holes on either end for water inlet/outlet and plant the mangroves in there covered by black plastic. Add light. Viola!!

What type of dirt/mud/sand/crushed coral. i.e., substrate can I put in the DSB bucket that would most benefit the mangroves??

Right now, this is how I have my mangroves. Floating in my 40g refugium. Actually, these were shipped poorly and this died. But I have seedlings and plan to get more.

I wouldn't use crushed coral. It catches to much detritus and becomes a nutrient sink. The finer the sand for a DSB the better. The mangroves will do well in fine sand. If you have Calfo and Fenners Inverts book, it has a wonderful section about mangroves and algae, and some great tips about using buckets for them.
