Couldnt get nem off rock

Yesterday, someone was selling a BTA and I went to go get it but ran into a problem. The nem was in a big hole on the person rock that we couldnt remove it. How can you get the nem to release its foot?


We tried ice cube in a bag.


He put the rock upside down in hopes the nem would come out of the rock to get light.


Any suggestions?

If possible try pointing a power head at at. Sometimes they don't like the direct flow and will move.

We had thought of that, but the guy selling the nem didnt have strong powerheads at all. He only had the hydors nano 240

Lift the rock out of the water so the anemone's tentacles and body are in the water, but the foot is above the waterline. It will let go, or move down on the rock. It helps if you can fix/prop the rock above the waterline and leave it there - it can take a while...

Yeah this was another idea, but the fact it would take awhile was discouraging. I couldnt stay at some stranger;s house all night waiting

True. The seller should take care of this before you get there. He should get the anemone free and put it in a breeder cage (or floating plastic container with holes in it) so that when you come to buy you can see the nem and check for damage and then cash and carry. Something like this works really well... cheap and effective:

He had just posted it on CL yesterday and I responded as soon as I saw it. It was such a good price I couldnt turn it down. So he wasnt ready for someone to get it. But hopefully he can get it off soon. My clowns need a nem to call home lol.

The one I have is small and they dont care for it. This one was about 5 inches wide. It really would make a nice addition. If it wasnt so deep in the hole, the rock around the foot could have easily been chieseled away without doing harm to the nem

Make him an offer for the rock. Or bring a piece of rock from your system to give him of comparable size.

The only way I was able to remove a RBTA was to chisel away at the rock until the part that the nem was attached to broke off. It's a bit drastic but was a quick and easy way to remove it.

Otherwise, the rock trade idea sounds like a great idea.

When I got my maxi mini anemone. I asked for the rock also that it was attached to. Mostly to alleviate any stress to the anemone in getting it home and into my tank. To this day it has stuck by it's rock..I also think to alleviate any damage or more stress than the anemone might endure....wise to do the rock thing. of course a maxi mini is most likely smaller than what you are getting..mine about 5 inch, but still it wouldn't matter to me even if it was bigger. I'd still go for the rock and the anemone...good luck either way you choose. Nice anemone you are looking at getting.
