This will be my first trip to Cozumel and my first time diving since getting my OW and dry suit cert 2 weeks ago. I can hardly wait. Lots of dives planned as I'm going with an experienced Cozumel diver. I can hardly wait....

You won't be disappointed. We were there in August and did 17 dives in 7 days. Delilah, La Francesa, Columbia (deep and shallow), Santa Rosa wall, San Clemente and night dive at Paradise Reef were our favorites. The night dive was especially nice to see octopus, large crabs and lobsters as well as tangs in their night time colors.
La Francesa, Santa Rosa had awesome swim throughs. Max depth 90 feet on them and Columbia Deep.

Good diving, should be plenty warm enough that you won't need your dry suit 
Keep an eye on your depth, it's easy to wander a bit too deep or get caught unawares in a down current that carries you deeper than planned if your not paying attention. Also be sure and track your own bottom time and NDL. Don't blindly follow the divemaster...some of them are known to deliberately overstay the limits to stretch bottom time, sort of a prevailing attitude that the chamber is there for decompression.

I agree with Bill. The dive shop we used was very good about pre-dive briefings and always emphasized our responsibility to monitor air consumption. They didn't mention monitoring bottom time much. This may have been because for the most part we were with the same divemasters/boat each day. However on one afternoon dive (after a dive to 90 feet and a second dive of the morning to 70 feet) my no deco bottom time got down to 5 minutes at the depth we were at. I notified the divemaster and my dive buddy and I ascended to about 45 feet and my bottom time increased enough that air again became the limiting factor.
Watch both diligently. Lots of our dives were from 65 to 90 feet and if you dive multiple dives every day this could be your limiting factor.

especially since it is your first dives. watch your own air and bottom time, don't expect the DM to monitor you. in South America more than other places, bottom time is treated pretty "loosely". also monitor your own depth, and make sure to ask how deep each dive is. Cozumel "not too deep" dives can be in the neighborhood of 90-100'. (or deeper) if you are not comfortable with that, take a shallower route!

Best dive I have ever done was a Cozumel Wall Drift dive. It is just amazing the amount of water moving through there and the life that clings to the wall into the abyss. That one was I think 90 ft.

Quite strong currents there so you will learn how to drift dive. As long as you have good buoyancy control it is quite relaxing, although as mentioned above the professionalism of the DM was a bit questionable and we were not always sure anyone would be there to pick us up at the end.

I've been there twice and employed Dive Paradise both times. Great dive masters, very conscientious about bottom times and describing the dives and depths before hitting the water. I heartily endorse them.

We also used Dive Paradise and will use them when we go back. Great service. Boats were never crowded. Never more than 8 divers in a group. They also are pretty open about going to what ever dive site you want to go within reason (we loved Delilah and dove it twice).

We stayed at Hotel Cozumel and used Dive Paradise and asked for and got Jose as our divemaster on 3 of our 4 days of diving. I don't remember the other DM that we had but I had great experiences with both guys and Dive Paradise as a whole. I'm already in the process of planning another trip to Cozumel in the next few months.... Absolutely LOVED IT.... We Dove Santa Rosa twice, Yukab twice, Tormentos, Columbia, and a few others I don't remmber.

If you go with Dive Paradise request/demand Jose. He has a wealth of experience and is wonderfully personable.
When I was last there the currents in/around Devil's Throat made it impossible for anyone but very seasoned divers. Beautiful site, but consider it day-by-day.
