Cracked tank frame

I bought a tank off craigslist for 40$ and i just noticed that the plastic frame around the top has a crack... is this tank still usable or should i pass it on?

I would say you can replace the rim, but its a pain in the butt job, and its also obvoius this tank was used as some type of reptile enclosure. It appears very old and well used. you would be much safer to find a different tank then take the risks.

Petco has a sale for a dollar per gallon for up to 55 gallon tanks. Start there.

Crack is not so much the problem as the fact the cross brace has melted. Top rim plays no structural role unless there is a cross brace, so you'd have to replace the top in this instance. I'm always inclined to assume if one part of the tank has endured abuse, the entire thing has. You also may find that the cloudiness in the front side has etched into the glass. Not sure if you've actually bought it yet, but I'd pass. Looks like whomever is selling it is passing his or her junk on to you. Frankly, I'd not use it.
 
I'd be more worried that the cross brace was melted than the crack. Looks like the seller used it as a terrarium for reptiles and the heat lamp melted the cross brace.

I wouldn't use it in that condition personally without replacing the rim with a steel one.
