cracked tank, help!

Why would anyone buy from him if he operates like this?

Because many people feel that it will not happen to them and others just don't know.

next time (yea right) drain the water, clean it up to "brand new status" and claim it arrived like that. Dishonest, but so is selling a defective tank that could've burst a month from now possibly killing livestock, ruining your floor, even burning your house down.
That F-in sucks dude
It kinda appears like something hit it, but I'm no glass expert

Canadian Tank - $4,000

Glass Cages Tank - 1,500 (Wow thats cheap, but wait thats not all folks)

New Fish - $1,000
New Coral - $5,000
New Carpet - $2000
New Electrical - $20,000
Mold Removal - $5,000
New pumps, water, sand, etc - $3,000

Spending $1,500 on a amphibian tank and $36,000 on everthing else priceless....

I heard a story of a guy who purchased a 500 gallon tank from Glass Cages. He came home one day to 3 inches of water throughout his house. In this cases all the rushing water damn near messed up the electrical, all the carpeting, and caused really bad mold and wood rot. All because the bottom simply cracked right through.

In your case though the crack on the side of the tank look indicative of someone bumping into the edge. I'M NOT SAYING THATS WHAT HAPPENDED, but I am sure that is what GC will claim.

Good Luck

Alex

If it were me I would be on the phone first thing monday morning. The thing that concerns me is that it popped while you were filling it. That leads me to believe that it is a structural issue. This soon into the build, I would start with a new tank rather than waiting for the failure.

And I have a GC tank and love it. Did not have any issues.
i would to the same,
I had the same thing happen with my 125 from them,
though they wouldn't replace it because of the way i did my over flows
so i ended up cutting the tank down, ordering a new panel and rebuilding it...

Good Luck!

wow. what a miserable two days.

So yesterday rolled around and I had no word from GC and called them. I asked for Tom and immediately got a hostile and aggressive respsonse as soon as i mentioned who i was. He claimed that he had been on the other line last saturday listening when i spoke to his wife, and that i called him an idiot and apparently claimed he didn't know how to build tanks, along with a number of other false accusations. Which was obviously all lies, IF he was on the line, and IF i was being this rude to his wife, surely he would chime in and say something? I asked if he had nothing better to do than to listen in on peoples conversations and he said "it gets pretty boring around here"

He claimed if the tank isn't leaking then its not covered, he was pretty irrational, ranting on and really not making any sense, and he was changing everything i said, and twisting it. Apparently at some point in our conversation i mentioned how it cracked and water leaked everywhere and I had a huge mess to clean up.........i never said anything of the sort, but, i did lose over 120gallons of fresh and pre-made saltwater, aswell has having no idea what to do with over 250lbs of live sand i have drying out.

So, our first encounter didn't work out too well.

I then emailed him the photos. He called me right back, more furious than before claiming that its not a crack, and that he cant even see anything wrong with it, and if its not leaking then he wont do anything. Just the same as before, he really was on an irrational rant, he seems rather insane, he wife as in the background shouting out abuse, saying "Omar said this, Omar said that", apparently I'm now middle eastern? The second conversation ended not so successfully too.

I then had to threaten him with a chargeback, i said in an email (as phone conversations were getting us nowhere) that i wanted my money back for the tank ($300) otherwise i will file a chargeback for the full amount of everything i paid for and would alert all the relevant authorities as I am well within my consumer rights to receive this money.

I immediately got a reply saying he had refunded the $300 but wanted the tank back as he think's i would still use it!!

"I have returned your $ 300.00 as requested. We'll call when we come thru the Savannah area and you can return the tank to our truck.

Since you said the tank did not leak, I expect you'll use it anyway so I need it back. The corner is obviously chipped from the outside but is not leaking. The tank is not cracked."

He must be insane to think i would continue to use this tank and risk losing livestock and damaging my house.

So, this is how i stand:

I am waiting for my $300 refund on the price of the tank, so I got somehwere, which is a relief, BUT I have emailed him back (nicely and formally) stating im more than happy to return the tank to him, but not in Savannah. I live 300 miles away in Charleston SC and am not willing to spend another $100 on gas. So we need to compromise and it needs to happen somewhere in SC later on in the year when they are coming through. AND if he wants to tank back, then i deserve the money i paid for the black silicone $35 (which never happened, i actually got clear) and also the money paid to make it reef ready $75.

so we will see what happens now. I have atleast got somewhere, but it was very unpleasant and made my stomach go over with the nastiness of the confrontation.

After receiving the $300 for the tank do you think i'm taking it too far requesting the money back i paid for silicone (which i never received) and for the reef ready?

no you should get it all ,i feel your pain i had the same thing happen with mitch a few years back,he went as far as to give me a fake tracking# ,after waiting for a replacement tank, that never came, i was out $1500.00 i orderded from some one else, aftre getting my money back, keep that email where he says he will refund your money ,that is all your credit card company will need ,along with your pictures , tell him you will smash it with a hammer and take a picture ,i would not lug it back to him

So sorry to hear about this, at least you're getting somewhere.

You deserve every penny you paid him: tank, silicone and overflow.

MAKE SURE ITS CREDITED WITH YOUR ACCOUNT ASAP!!!
He could be lying to buy time untill the transaction clears which takes at least a month or so. Dont believe him, call your credit card company and file the claim regardless. If it is credited then you have nothing to worry about, but if its not then you can lose because of the time loss factor with the credit card companies. I used to be a former retailer so I know the ins and outs. American express by the way is better for consumer than for the retailers.

are their tanks really that bad?

i always hear people ranting about them but wondered if they really deserve the (bad) reputation or if it was just a few people who had bad experiences then escalated from there.

i am not interested in the company but i know if i was going to order a new tank then would want to really think hard before buying one from them.

regards

im not too worried as i have email documents proving he said he would refund me atleast the $300 and if it doesnt show up then i will inform my credit card company.

I will wait for his response and if there is no more replies or a refund then i will contact my credit card company

if the $300 shows up, but no reply or the rest of my money, then i will just sell the tank on craigslist and not give it back to him.

It amazes me the lack of customer service that some people provide. Not even regarding replacing or not replacing the tank. Them being rude when fielding a question them antagonizing you when you call them is just rediculous. I don't understand.

How much did the tank cost?

How much did the tank cost?

the tank was $300.

i had overflows built for $75 and black silicone for $35 (but the tank came with clear silicone)

Don't wait more than 30 days to file the claim. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and file it now. If he does give you a refund for $300 AND you file a claim, you can simply send him a check for $190 to account for the other charges for the tank. You shouldn't be taking a loss on this.

And as far as GC, thanks. The best thing you can do is post your experiences. That's such garbage man, sorry for all the trouble. It's like turning into a really exciting experience setting up your tank into an absolute nightmare.

Bad customer service and poorly made tanks. :(

thats exactly how i feel. couldn't have put it better. For companies like GC its just a tank, some glass stuck together, but for us, the reef keeper, it's so much more. Its many, many hours of hard work spent to raise the money for such a purchase, it's hours of dreams, research and ideas. It's not just a hobby for us, it's a passion. Thats why it's so tough to have been so excited, almost done with setting it up and then have this happen, and to have no sympathy from the company.

but two things:

1: i did actually file a claim with the credit card company, just as he phoned on another line telling me he had refunded the money (it has yet to show up on my account) so the women in the call center took all the information, tank size, what happened, date, and then made a note of it on my account. so i feel thats enough right there to get things started without any worries if the money doesn't show.

2: i just ordered my new 120 through my trusted LFS, Tideline Aquatics in N. Charleston, SC http://www.tidelineaquatics.net/ . I know everyone thinks their store is the best around, but these guys really are phenomenal, most amazing customer service i have ever known. And how did they win me over? well, when i first started this hobby i purchased two baby clowns from a competitor of theirs, one just refused to eat and perished, this store also sold me a chocolate chip star fish with an anemone which obviously ended disastrously. So i went to Tideline to try them out, told them my troubles and THEY replaced my baby clown for free. Just amazing.

i think its a AGA 120, 48 x 25 x 24. I will be going there tomorrow to check it out and if i'm happy i'll pay for the tank :)

Not just that, but the cost for them to repair the tank and give you a new one is minimal. It just doesn't make sense that they would want to put up such a fight. Companies have to pay for a good reputation for customer service.

At least you got your money back. When buying my tank i made the LFS fight on the price so i got my 90gal cheap. Aquatic imports beat Tideline price by 15%.

Nice seeing another local here on the site.

Good luck in your build. PM me if you ever need any help.

GlassCages has shown a pattern of just not caring. They found the loophole: undercut everyone else's prices and throw customer service and good will out the window.

They're the Sam Walton of aquarium manufacturing.
