Ok I have seen this several times and I always have one question I want to asked. This is not only directed at the OP it is for anyone in simular situation. Also I read what I wrote below, it sounds rude to me. Please be assure it is not meant to be taken rudely I just could not figure how to make it sound better.
why 3 months ago when you knew the swap is coming do you not say to your boss hey I have an event on this day so I am giving three months notice that I wont be in.
I have not worked in awhile but that is what I would do and it always worked. Someone takes your schedule you take thiers. My husband does it, his employeer reworks what is being made on the schedule on days like that.
Are the employeers just that inconsiderate they wont allow time off or did ya not think of asking for the time off?

Last year I had open heart surgery and was not working for 6 months. Well the company I work for does not allow you to accumilate vacation while off work. So this year I lost 60 hours out of my 120 I get. But the kicker is I work 12 hour days. So my 60 hours I get this year equals to 5 days off. I wanted to wait until summer to use them since I did not have a summer last year. Otherwise I would use a vacation day.

I feel your pain. This is going to be one fantastic swap and I can't go either. I don't even have any room in my tank for corals. I want to go just to see everything.

See that totally makes sense. Its a priority thing. Even though ya really want to go. Summer is higher on the list.
I wanted to go last year. I did not have a tank so I could not justify the travel. I made my husband promise to go this year. He agreed so this has been scheduled all year. Someone will have to die to get out of going.
