CRAP! My bluethroat trigger jumped.

Don't ask me why, but at 11:30pm, I'm watching the Simpsons, and think to myself, "you know, I didn't see my trigger today at all?" Sure enough, he'd jumped.

Had him about a year, was a model citizen. Didn't nip at anything, loved my Naso tang. I'm soooo bummed.

I used to have screen on the back of my old canopy, believe me, I'm putting it up again on my new one. (that's even taller, so more room to get through and on the floor.)

I'll probably get another blue throat. Cool fish. I know crosshatches are considered reef safe, but they get too big and need more tank than my 180 can give. Any other "reef safe" triggers I should look into?

sargassum triggers r awesome. i want to get a trigger and ive narrowed it down to sargassum or blue throat.

Sargassum Trigger is the best choice.

That's too bad. Sorry for your loss. I've never known them to jump. They are very timid IME. Was it being harrassed/chased by anything?

I have a male in my 150 for quite a while now and to this day he's very shy. I have to point food in his direction as otherwise he barely gets anything to eat before the other fish gooble up the food.

Now, the sargassum in my 270 is a totally different story. He is brash and will eat food right out of my hand. I agree with the others, if you want to try another trigger that is equally "reef safe", try a sargassum. They are beautiful in their own right. I have found them to be more active swimmers out in the open than the blue-throats as well.

I have had crosshatches, and you are making a wise decision not putting one in a 180. They do get large. I had a male (and smaller female mate) that was about 12" long in my 270 and I felt even that was a bit cramped.

crosshatches get the same size as bluethroats as full grown, just finding a small crosshatch is near impossible.

My previous one also did the suicidal leap, and I remember dismantling my reef and looking everywhere for it. A couple months later I found it in my cabinet in the only spot I didn't look. I never would have guessed he would have jumped, and thought he died and got chowed by crabs.

The one I have now is a model citizen though, they are just the best when it comes to having a reef safe fish with personality.
