Crocea Clam issue.

I got my first clam about 3 weeks ago - a Crocea about 4 - 6" long. I put it on the bottom of my 35gal. hex tank under a 175W, 15k MH pendant. It opened up nicely for the first week then decided to turn itself on its side away from the light. Now it opens up very little when the light is on. Will it be ok? I've tried moving it back so that it is facing the light but it just moves itself back on its side. Any help would be appreciated.

it needs to be facing upwards, so the mantle can catch the light. Try putting it higher in the rocks. Croceas dont stand too well on their own.

Ok - more problems with the Crocea clam - I woke up this morning and found about 8 hermit crabs on it....the shell was open and there were actually hermits inside. I have the clam in QT now - I don't know if it will make it though as it's not opening or shutting any. Is it dead?

Wow that sucks - I don't know what went wrong - I have pristine water, great lighting, and I was feeding it cyclopeez. Any ideas what happened?

croceas like to be in rockwork.. your clam was trying to move. i placed mine in the sand bed it turned every way it could.. after looking on here in this forum i learnt to place it in the rocks .. so i did and it's been in the same spot and rooted and doubled in size..

what kind of hermits do you have?

Well, mine is still hanging on - barely. I will be putting him back in the display tank soon - on some rocks. I have very small blue-leg hermits in the tank - and I think they are hungry as the tank is somewhat new and not much to scavenge. Hoping for the best. Thanks for the advice.

I QT'd the clam for a day - then put it back into the display tank. The hermits didn't take long to jump on him so I once again removed him. He was gone the next day. =(

that happened to my first clam too... it was before I had my halide... so maybe it was not getting enough light, but as soon as the hermits were going for the clam it seemed like it was too late.. nothing I could do would bring the clam back around... it was sad, but the second clam I bought has doubled in size and is doing great with the PCs and halide... good luck to you though...

I have a rule that I quickly adapted in my reeftank....

...NO HERMITS. They simply did more harm to my tank than good.

Sorry to hear about your clam K-Rok.
