crossbreeding clowns

I have a regular percula clown and an ocllaris clown in my ten gallon reef. They get along well and they both eat there food they each have plenty of caves to hide in. Could they possably breed? I would happly make a bigger system to raise the babys and I have a bunch of friends that would take a clownfish or two.

Percula and ocellaris can most definitely pair and breed in home aquariums. If they do start spawning, and you decide that you want to raise them, keep in mind that it neither cheap or easy. Even if you plan on selling them, you will almost always loose money on normal clowns.

Woah, I just looked at your sig. If you really do have all those fish in a 10 gallon, you will have major aggression issues when the clowns pair and want to breed.

Out of curiosity, how do you manage to keep everything healthy and the water clean? I'm guessing just a lot of water changes maybe?

If you live in an area that has a lot of fish stores (like the op) breeding "normal" clowns can make you money. The fish stores around me give me 1/4 or 1/3rd of what they sell them for. So, a $20 ocellaris clown gets me $6 or $7. They'll take 10-15 at a time. I won't get rich doing it, but the breeding hobby can certainly pay for itself.

Sell to 3 or 4 fish stores, and you could easily gross a few hundred a month.

They can for sure breed, I have a set of them breeding in my tank right now. My thread on the topic is just a few spots below this one :).

As for it costing a lot, thats not neccessarily true. It depends on how you do it. Growing your own phyto costs less but takes more time. rotifers are not expensive to maintain and I have everything needed to raise clown fry for about 6 months, cost of materials was around $200.

Obviously you have to add in cost of growout tanks if you don't have them as well as the cost to run those tanks.

But if it is something you enjoy it is always fun to do, I know I am having fun so far and Im not even really up to raising the fry (dam things won't hatch).

They can breed, however they might need a bigger tank. The parameters probably aren't as stable as a bigger tank and that can turn off breeding. I have two in a 29 biocube and they are about to breed been happy for 2 years.
