I inherrited a niger trigger from a buddy of mine who moved out of state. I have always wanted a pair of crosshatch in my 180 sps only reef, but am now worried do to the new niger.

Can this work? Also, what are the chances that a random male crosshatch and random female crosshatch getting along? Should I only purchase a male or just a female? Would one of these fish get along with a niger?

Sorry for so many questions, but I would appreciate your assistance.

GO BUFFS!

Chances of a random pair of CH getting along is pretty good. I had only one instance when a male showed aggression to a female he wasnt aquainted with. He bit her sides up pretty good but nothing life threatening. I would assume that a male CH would be ok with the niger, but I dont know if the niger would be ok with him. I would want the CH in first, then after he gets settled throw the niger in (ask someone who knows about nigers first).

I posted this pic on probably 4 different threads but here it is again.

The niger is about 3" long. Thus far, there has been zero aggression, and I was hoping that when the crosshatch's come, he will remain a great reef citizen.

What are your thoughts now?

You should be fine. I have had my niger for about a year now and he was very peaceful when I got him and is still peaceful. But if you are really worried about it DON'T put him in there. Crosshatches are alot of money and I don't think you want to lose that along with that Fantasic looking fish.

I had a niger, picasso, pink tail and assasi in a larger tank with a crosshatch. They all got along. As the niger grows, don't expect it to still be a good reef citizen. The xhatch pair will likely come with a 6+ inch male. They can be cramped in a 180G tank.

Here is a pic of my old male at about 7.5":

Here is a 4" - perhaps the smallest one that I have ever seen. It still had some juvi/female markings, but also had some male markings. I don't know what it will look like when it grows 2 inches:

If it's one of the peaceful nigers, you'll have no trouble. If it's one of the aggressive nigers, it will probably beat on the crosshatches.

I agree with penny- go with your gut instinct, you know your niger's personality, we don't. It would be a shame to have a fish die because you second guessed yourself.

jda- what do you see that indicates a male in the lower pic- looks like a typical female to me.

The picture on the bottom shows no signs of being male. I would say it is a typical female. Its very rare to find males that small, but depending on tank conditions its not impossible to turn male later. I think it would depend on the existance of other males/females.

that pic on the bottom is all woman.

the males have red where the females have yellow on their fins and vise-versa.

and the male has a gold body while the female has the grey body.
