1. NO
2. Sure but why?

I agree. No it is not easier than sand.
I just changed back from crushed coral to sand.

Crushed coral is not as nice looking as sand and it also tends to allow for pockets to form more readily.I have crushed coral in my 75 and I don't like it at all. The 120 I'm setting up is going to run a shallow sand bed.
Putting crushed coral over the sand is possible but as others have said ,why?

I had high nitrates and ph problems when I had crushed coral in a 60g cube. I scooped it all out and just added sand. Problem resolved.

but doesnt crush coral aka "aragonite" give you a stable calcium level due to the high calcium concentration in the crush coral? Would sand blow everywhere and not harbor as many organisms due to the compression of sand versus the porous characteristics of aragonite? ive never tried sand, but maybe i should?

I really don't know either way, but I DO know that my dad uses crushed coral in his tank, and his corals grow crazy good. I attributed it to the crushed coral but it might not be that at all. I don't use it. My corals don't grow well either....
