crvz's hole in the wall

I have the same reflectors as you and i was considering a DD tank how high do you have your lights suspended above the tank and how do you like the spread thanks in advance for the reply

Frick! As you can see from three weeks back, I waited 4 weeks to add the new fish into the display. They looked great. Today, the powder blue has ich. That is irritating. So looks like I'll be headed towards round 3 of hypo in one year. Maybe "infuriating" is a better word for it. Especially because it's going to be a huge pain in the neck to catch them all.

Dang Chris, bummer. Sorry to hear that. :(

Chris,
Sorry to hear about that!

On a better note, Nice CLAMS and your fish room looks good still and seems very functional. Keep up the good work and best of luck!

Is the Ich bad? I've always been under the impression that healthy fishs' immune system could fight back the minor outbreaks effectively, so maybe just try feeding them really well for a week in the DT to see if it goes away on its own?

Good idea Alex. My yellow tang that's been with me for years got ick in my old tank. I left it alone (not knowing any better back in the early 2000's or the resources to quarantine) and just feed him well and left well enough alone. Within a few days the ick was gone and has been healthy ever since. Might be worth a shot to see if it doesn't improve on it's own.

I watched the powder blue have a few spots to full on ich outbreak over about 4 days. Then I saw some on the foxface. I have generally taken the same approach with ich... let it alone and see if it clears up. Then one time I waited too long and it took out the majority if my fish by the time I got them in the QT.

This morning I was up (we have a 9 day old baby boy at the house, and I take the early morning hours so the wife can sleep) and caught all the fish in about 40 minutes. I was shocked that it was a success (the canary wrasse literally swam into the net, the bicolor blennies came out with rocks). However, my tank now looks like this (and it's after I put some stuff back in). Tomorrow morning I'll re-aquascape.

New baby? Congrats! I used to take the the late shift since I'm a night owl and my wife is up early. Glad those days are far behind me.

Except now I have one teenager and one in the wings. Ugh, I think teenage years are designed to help parents accept when kids are ready to move out on thier own. But I digress....

Sorry to hear about the ich magnet...I mean the powder blue. :) Good luck with treatment!

Here's the main offender. They are all in the QT and I've got the water down to about 1.019 so far (it was 1.0265 yesterday, and I'll keep swapping out salt for fresh water about as quickly as I can make it... I only have a 50 gallon per day RO/DI system that I've been using all this time).

I also took the skimmer off the main display (seeing as it has no fish) and stuck it on the QT. What will the impact of skimming at low salinity be?

What a difference 24 hours can make. I've got the specific gravity down to about 1.013 by this morning, but the powder blue tang is markedly improved. And thus far, all the fish are still showing healthy appetites and seem to be doing well. I'll drop it down to 1.009 throughout the rest of the day.

Thats a gorgeous Chevron I spy in the corner of that picture, do you have any more shots of him? Very glad to hear/see that the PBT is doing so much better, he looked pretty uncomfortable in the previous picture.

You should try quinine sulfate. I use it to at treat all new fish for ich. It only takes three rounds of three days each, doesn't seem to affect the biofilter, and will definitely take care of your ich problem. Fish don't seem to lose their appetite. HTH

I'll have to look into that. Is that something you dose to the QT system?

I've done a poor job of catching images of late, but I did get this yesterday. It's crummy, but hey, you get what you pay for.

Quite a difference! Good to see. Thats an all star line-up of fish CRVZ. Nice collection.

Thanks! This explains why I desire to keep them healthy. The purple and chevron where additions of opportunity, and while I see them at the diver's den regularly, I couldnt justify retail price for those fish.

When I finally had my new 215 gal DT cycled I started moving my fish from the old tank
(85gal) into their new home. I moved 2 fish a week. I moved my Regal Tang and Powder Brown last.....The process took about a month. I had no signs of ich in my old tank for over 3 years however after 3 days the powder brown started rubbing against some rock and swimming into the direct flow of the power head. Next day he was covered. Next day the Regal showed signs along with my pyramid butterflies. All were still eating. I went out and purchased a product from the makers of Special Blend called Microbe Lift Herbtana. It is reef safe...won't harm corals or inverts. You turn off the skimmer and treat as per instructions. I have been using Special Blend for a long time and love it......so I tried this product. Well I can't say definitively that the ich went away because of this product but all the fish survived (along with corals and inverts) and no signs of ich. Could it be that the fish were healthy so their immune system made it possible to fight off the attack....Yes but it could also be that the product contributed by boosting their immune system. I know ich remains in the tank unless you leave it fallow for 6 wks but I have since added fish and I still see no signs of ich. Just my 2 cents...................
