Crystal Sea bioassay vs. regular

I found your article very interesting, but one statement caught my attention. Do you really think the only difference between the bioassay version of salt and the regular version of salt is with the dechlorinator (per the personal communication)? What is in the dechlorinator and how do you think that would change the numbers compared to natural sea water?

I realize it would only be speculation, but I would be interested in your thoughts. The price of the two versions is basically the same so its no big deal there.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I think the dechlorinator in question is sodium thiosulfate, which is the "good ol' " standard dechlorinator. I don't think its presence would have any effect, but it might. On the other hand, for anyone using RO/DI or water otherwise dechlorinated, it is immaterial, and why add anything extra?

Hello again Dr.Ron
So do you think the crystal sea with dechlorinator will have any adverse affect with RODI or should we just not take the risk of adding it? I assume you will be using the bio-assay formula but for a lot of us that would be a little expensive(especially shpping).
What is your input on this?

It is just speculation, but I don't think there will be much difference between the two mixes.

Dr.Ron,
Thanks for all your help and taking your time and money to do the testing on the salts. Most of us appreciate it while others have no sense at all. Did you notice all the accusers mostly have like 20 and less posts? Odd!! Anyway we are greatful for what you did for the hobby. This is a personal opinion but i would like to know if you personally would use the crystal sea with dechlorinator? I just dont want to mess up, because i am setting up my first tank(not filled with water yet) and want to get it right.
BTW it cost over $50!!!!!! for 1 bucket of bio-assay shipped!!! Thats too rich for my blood. The dechlor version shipped costs about half of that.

So far I am using the excess left over after the test of Bioassay formula.

Ouch, but that is about what it costs me to get a bucket of IO shipped to my house (and I have to have all my salt shipped in).

I would probably go with the dechlor version with the cost differential that you noted.

:D

Thanks again good doc. I will go with the dechlorinator(found out its $30.98 shipped to my house).I cant imagine how much it would cost for 1 bucket of bioassy to your house :eek1: . I cant thank you enough :D
