CT 265 Build

What are you using for light in the Wrasse Tank? Are you planning on any other corals besides GSP? How is the new skimmer body from MTC?

When I originally bought this 90 off craigslist, it came with a few of those TrulumenPro strip LEDs. Not much good for corals, but more than enough for Fish and GSP. No plans for any other kinds of inverts in this tank (other than perhaps some CUC members).

Don't have the longer skimmer body yet. Maybe by the end of August.

First MAJOR Speedbump

First MAJOR Speedbump

For reasons that elude me, the five clams in my tank have started to die off. Most recent clam was a couple of months ago from a reliable source, so I cannot see how a disease has made it in, but that appears to be exactly what is happening. Smallest maxima died last week in a cloud of mucus. Both squamosa, large ones, are retracted most of the time. Deresa was showing similar signs early last week but appears to be improved a bit. Maybe some kind if bacterial infection? Am at a loss. Water parameters are spot on. Damn twitchy things clams, and a reminder to self why I will not spend big bucks for one of them.

It's funny, the year mark has lawys been a tough time for every tank I have ever kept. This one is now about 10 months setup so crap coming early apparently.

Do you have a quarantine tank? I'd remove them all to quarantine. You might have a hitchhiker, or a water problem, or maybe one of your fish is picking at them when you're not around to see; at night, perhaps.

If they get better in quarantine you know to start looking at your display tank. If there's another problem, like pyramidellid snails, then they will probably show up easier in the quarantine tank.

Probably good advice. Strange thing is that they look normal at night, but then retracted during the day almost as if they had developed light sensitivity. So far all the SPS look fine, so I don't think its a WQ problem. No pyramid snails though I guess anythings possible. Lots of QT so will move them over tomorrow and see.

For me, generally, getting past the one year mark with a tank is 'the gauntlet' - the point when something goes amiss. So, see last picture ....

FTS, left, right, and the 'hair ball' .....

..... and an unhappy clam!

Have moved it around, inspected the underneath, not seen any nipping .... so next step is to move it to a different tank and see.

Now that you are so successful with this size tank, and since you're already planning on dumping the wife anyways, isn't it time to start planning for something bigger? ;)

Dave.M

Hah, yeah! Wife dumping me if anything .....

Don't know if I could handle anything bigger. Always though 96 long x 30 tall x 36 deep had a nice ring to it (what's that, about 450 give or take?) but then water changes start to become problematic. Would be nice to have more open space - of course, thought I'd have that in my 265, but just no self control.

Getting close to having to find a bigger home for the magnifica. That won't be easy - even if I give it away!

Yes, the way you've got it set up I can't help but think it would look better if it was 10-12" wider front to back.

Dave.M

I seriously toyed with getting the Marineland 300DD but really couldn't fit the extra depth - plus I liked the extra foot of length. Looked at a custom tank that was 30" front to back, but too much $$, and very very heavy.

Well if the wife is dumping you, just go ahead and pay for the 450, send it my way, and you can come visit it anytime you want.

Finally got through your thread, nice work and really like the pyramids. Do you remember any problems with them and any of your corals?

Have only lost two corals since setting up this tank. One was a piece of acropora that died for no apparent reason, the other an open brain that got nipped by my Flame Angel.

I have a long thread on the pyramids in the Reef Fish forum. Details my trials and tribulations with these fish.

Moved one of the squamosa clams into the refugium and it is already back to being completely open after less than one day. Close inspection of the clam revealed no signs of any pyramid snails nor any irritating bristle worms, so it seems pretty clear that the problem is one or more of my fish are nipping at them. Will give it a few more days, but if diagnosis holds then I'm going to have to find a new home for them.

Found it, thank you!

Unexpected Growth!

Unexpected Growth!

Added a growth supplement to my tank a couple of weeks ago, hasn't made all that much difference to coral growth, but look what happened to the skimmer .....

:lolspin::lolspin::lolspin:

I always cut my skimmer off for an hour after I add that stuff. Otherwise mine will FLOW like yours did.
