cucs and nudis

I read that cucs can release bad toxins if they are injured, are they worth the risk? Do any of our LFS ever stock them? My tomini tang and blue tang have taken to swimming over to the same spot to "take care of business" (very funny) and my sand sifting goby won't go over to that spot. Ive come to refer to it as the "poop corner". Its also a lower flow area due to the overflow so I am looking for a poo eater to clean it up a little.

I have 2 cuc's and have only put 1 in my tank, They do a great job keeping the sandbed clean along with 2 sandsifting starfish. I also have never seen any Ill effects from them.

Bill, what did you pay for them and where did you get them? Is the other one in your dsb?

nashvegas, I have a lot of nass snails in there but they can't seem to keep up, i may need to get some more.

I NO longer steer people to any commercial enterprises, That being said they are fairly cheap and can be obtained at many Online sites. The one I bought split in my tank and they both are still In there, Having one In a DSB might be detramental not sure on that though.

Yeah, don't think I'd want any critters other than bacteria in my DSB. :) Simply because you don't want anything disturbing the layers and what not.

hmmmmm 81 tanks, in murfreesboro, self employed, beached mermaid has got to be the jungle! hehe

Bill I just thought that if small particulate were to settle in your dsb in your sump that might help but makes sense about not sturring up bad things in the dsb.

There Is lots of Cucumbers But the one that Is recommended Is the tigertail/brown w/white spikes looking worms. Not sure of all the rest, being reef safe or any of them being safe 100% I have had mine for quite a while with no adverse affects. But buyer beware of risk associated with Cuc's

Even with the Tiger Tails, make sure that if you get yourself a cuc. you watch its behavior for the first 7 days. If a cuc. is to lay eggs make sure you remove them immediately (thousands of eggs dying is much more toxic that one cuc.). The laying of eggs will happen usually within the first 3 days after transport IF it is going to happen, the stress of transport is likely the cause of the infertile egg laying.

BeachedMermaid, I have nothing against LFS and have shopped In every one In this area and then some. What I will not do Is recommend one In particular over another anymore. Everyone knows all the LFS and can make that decision on their own. Hope you understand my point of view on this matter being a business owner yourself.

That is great you are watching the thread as it is a great source of information although you may want to change your occupation to LFS owner so it will be clear for some people may think you are trying to hide that. Just FYI. Also I would become real familiar on do's and don'ts on RC as they hold you to a high standard of the rules IE main one is no selling :) Oh and it would be nice to know your first name as if this is William I would have a hard time referring to you as a Beached Mermaid :) so I would guess this is Crystal;)

I have kept many holothruia cukes over the years and never had a problem with them hurting my tank when one died. The ones you have to worry about releasing toxins are mostly the brightly colored ones. I actually had a small one spill it's guts  and the tank suffered no harm. They only clean the top layer of sand so I don't think they would be detrimental to any DSB.

It really depends on the source. Most large companies will house them with other potentially fatal species. Ask where each of the specimens was shipped from, the healthiest specimens are shipped directly from Hawaii.

Sweet! Glad to hear you guys will be getting Achilles. Those are my favorite tangs. I can put one in my 45g, right? j/k The Achilles is reserved for my big tank, whenever that is. :)
