cucumber died!

I purchased two black cukes about a week ago. Last night when I got home I noticed one of them looked like he was losing patches of 'hair' (whatever the fuzzy stuff is that coats them). Some patches looked red, some white. He was also sliming up so I removed him. The other one (and the burgundy linkia star I bought at the same time) look fine. What could have caused this? I checked my PH (8.5). My alk was 7 dkh last night...I drip kalkwasser daily. SG was 1.027. My ammonia test was negative.

they also shed occasionally, to reveal a shiny new coat.
with starvation, they generally get smaller and smaller as they consume their own mass to survive, then die.
improper acclimation (hurried) can cause the skin to 'rupture' and go necrotic. it usually looks like dead white skin with the edges rotting off. it usually shows up within a day or three. but if you bought a linckia and acclimated him in the same manner and he's doing fine, then I'd rule acclimation out as the culprit.

I think it's likely it was just 'shedding'.
