cucumbers

It has been suggested to me the Tiger Cucumbers are great sand cleaners, but the poison in the tank from one if it dies scares me. A dead anemone once took lots of livestock with it. i didn't know what a dead anemone look like at the time. Stupid I know. Anyway, do cucumbers scare anyone else? Do you trust them? How do know when it's time to get it out. i don't want another tragedy.

Thanks

Tom

I thought of getting one until I read the same thing. So instead I got a sand sifting goby and I'm glad I got him, he's always cleaning the sand.

I have one cuke in my tank, that my wife refers to as Mr. Hankey.

This thing has been with me about 5 years now and keeps the sand nice.

Run enough carbon in your system and if something were to happen, the carbon would cover you. Alot of people have these in their tanks and they are great.

Good Luck.

Joe

Gobies are great sand sifters but cucumbers are detrivours apparently so they actually clean the sand.

My tank is still young about 8 months, after it's a year old I may try a cucumber, I did read that they need a mature tank to have success.

I know a lot of folks bought cucumbers from reeftopia in our group buy.

I was wondering how they are doing? Would you buy again? I'm thinking of getting a couple the next time around.

I bought a couple from the group buy. They're a little on the small side (1-2"), but they're doing fine. They do a pretty good job of keeping my DSB clean on the surface. I didn't see them for a few months after I first got them, but I'll see them fairly regularly now. So far so good.

The carribean varieties don't nuke your tank if they die. As stated above Reeftopia carries them, and they are a great addition to any cleanup crew.

Yes like stated above cab. are safe. I know this from first hand knowledge. I once had 2 cucumbers and now I have 1. one died about 2ish month ago. no ill effects.

I bought one of the yellow ones from Reeftopia nearly two years ago and he's still going strong. He cleans the sand tirelessly every night, and is visible during the day on occasion.
