culling clown fry

I think if you want a lightning you'll have to get used to deformities. Even if the F1s I saw looked pretty bad, but IIRC they were still released to get the breeding projects going.

I'd rather buy a beautiful WC pair than those things for $500 a pop . . .

Yes!

Some of the designer prices are really out of whack.

The only tank bred clowns I may be willing to pay that kind of money for would be perfectly defect free F1 A. latezonatus

thanks guys.. I've been following lightning maroon breeding for a year now.. still haven't found a decent one yet. I'll keep looking..

always wanted 1 lightning maroon + 1 gold striped maroon..

I've been following you guys' clown thread. when you do produce some alpha offspring, I'll be first in line!

That is a cross that should never be made as Matt Pedersen writes on his website:

"... Preventing Hybrids
Of course, this all relates to another concern of mine, and that is the future hybridizing of Lightning Maroons with Sumatran Gold Stripe Maroons. I have TREMENDOUS issues with that cross"¦it's irresponsible and could be extremely damaging to the long term genetic preservation of a CLEAN PNG line of Lightning Maroon Clownfish. I truly want any breeders to only use other White Stripe Maroons from PNG, which in 2012 were only available through UniqueCorals.com (the US source for EcoAquariums PNG, which is the only export operation in PNG). I can probably make a contract that you can't do this, force people to agree to it, and yet still, no matter how much a rail against it, there will be some smart-*** breeder somewhere who is thinking about the short-term profit, and not the long term responsibility that they have as breeders. I will have no problems villainizing such a breeder for such greedy & shortsighted pursuits."

No examples of "damaging". Articles like that should really explore the negative effects of cross breeding and not operate on assumptions. So the author wants to preserve the PNG line? Ok no problem. But why discourage an act without discussing specific negative effects of the act itself. If there are serious problems with hybridization of lightning maroon clowns with the gold stripes I would like to know what they are.

That's called duress in contract law and a contract entered into under duress is voidable. I question the knowledge and intelligence of the author.

There's a lfs already attempting this.. I'll go back and check this week to see how it's doing. They've been keeping the 2 maroons together for almost half a year now.

and I think it's a bit too late to control lightning maroons.. they are everywhere now. as low as $200.

I won't be breeding. I just want to look at two different colored maroons. :D

I don't think you can control what people do with a fish they buy from you. But you can control what they can call its offspring - or rather can't call it.
The thing they could have done is to trademark the name. That's what some other companies did with their designer clowns.

What I would like to see is a network of clownfish breeders that do their best to preserve original local varieties of clownfish in high quality and with total traceability. That is what is done with killifish and some species and local varieties now only exist in captivity because their natural habitats have been destroyed.
