Current and Flow Layout Question

Clown Pimp
I have a 75 that is cycling and I need some advice on flow direction.

I have the HOB skimmer box on the top right with the return (~380GPH) on the middle of the tank pointing at the front of the tank. On the left side of the tank in the back I have the Magnum 350 intake with the return paired with the sump return also facing forward to the front of the tank. I get a lot of detritus "zones" at the bottom of the tank around the base and nooks of the live rock. I purchased a MP10 yesterday and while playing with it, I realized this little pump can displace sand in no time flat!

I am looking for suggestions on where to place the return for the filters (sump and canister) and where to put the MP10. I realize each setup is unique but I am hoping that there are some "general" guidelines.

Thanks

Justin

In general, it is wise to place your returns on the opposite end of your tank from the intake (i.e. overflow and magnum intake). This will tend to allow newly filtered water to push the more stale water toward the intakes. As far as your MP10 stirring sand, it looks like you have some pretty fine sand. That't just going to happen with your grade of sand. You might consider applying a layer of crushed coral or a coarser grade of sand to minimize this problem. BTW, your tank is off to a great start. You might want to consider placing your heater in the sum as a rock could tumble down and break it rather easily.

If the tank is cycling you should really find a different tank to house that french angel until its ready.

For flow you ideally want to get the water "rolling" so that the water from the bottom will circle to the top so the filters can get the dirty water out.

I did not expect this big of a cycle, I have a wet/dry system designed for a 125 Gallon tank that was in use with a huge fish load on this tank for 5+ years. I culled the fish except for the two angels (French and Emperor). They are both happy as a lark, eating, and swimming, follow me around the room. I know I should pull them, but don't have a place for them. The ammonia if 5PPM and I dose amquel on a daily basis. The high readings don't seem to have any effect on them... 3+ weeks into the cycle. I’ll call a friend and see if he can “fish sit” for me.

I will move the skimmer box to the center along with the intake from the canister. I'll place the returns at the outside corners and keep the MP10 where it is. I'll face the two returns towards the center of the tank from their respective corners.
