Custom Colors 125 Build

I kind of did a quick look at this thread and must say you have a beautiful system. I do have one question/comment though. Have you had any issues with the subwoofer being in the stand? Many studies have been made about loud bass and SW tanks. Which is why many large tanks have been removed from loud music drinking establishments. The livestock never thrives very long and constantly needs to be swapped out. Have you had any issues?

well i have had no trouples with live stock that can be pointed to the sub under the side of the tank(just nitrates :( ) we only watch movies on the weekends with it on and just enough to hear it and not realy feel it (even though i could feel it if i wanted to, trust me :) ) the sub is aimed twards the wall and there is about 1.5" between the wall and the stand so all the sound reverbs back at the speaker and then out the top (very good bass that way, i have always aimed my home subs twords the wall for the better room filling sound with out the HARD HIT)
plus the clubs play there music REALLY LOUD!!! :eek2: and every night for hours at a time. savear noise would be bad but the noise that comes and goes every once and a wile would be fine. remember how loud wales are! and they come and go too. the only fish they kill are the ones they eat :D

Great video... Great thread! Finally getting around to working on my build after fooling around with used tanks and broke down and bought a new RR one - mega flows.

I was curious as to 1) if you are still using the auto lift-assists for your canopy? and 2) if so, have you had any problem with them? and 3) do you have any lessons learned or what I would do differently here?

Thanks!

good to hear that your working on yours again!
me on the other hand have realy not ben doing to much to mine except feeding lots less for hair alge problems now almost gone, and doing water changes.
i have ben working on a new skimmer and kalk reactor for some time now, well till summer came around :) since i spent most of last summer working on this tank hard, im taking it easy and bringing back one of my other past hobbys, RC cars and trucks. last night i got one to 39mph and thats slow to how fast some people have them (143mph check youtube :) )

but back to topic. to answer your q's, YES im still using the assist lifts that are gas filled. NO i am not having any problems with them. see for your self, just taken 10 min ago :)

lessons learned
there are 3 things that pop in my head. 1 dont make two drains to one till your though the floor. it just makes to much noise. 2 when you go though the floor make shure you make it so you can cut your pvc shorter many times so if you change you set up you dont have to replum your whole drain line upstairs. 3 make shure you leave enough room behind your tank for you to get your hands and a PVC SNIPS back there with no problems.
well after i filled the tank is when i found out about the noise, and when i went to change it a few months later is when i noticed it was VERY tight with only leaving 7" behind the tank to cut the pvc. then few months later i change my lines to go to my frag tank and boy they got shorter and shorter and now i would be lucky to beable to get to them and cut them to do another change up.
FYI.... FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT SAID THAT MY HORSE SHOE CRAB WONT LIVE LONG,..... WELL I SEE IT FOR A FEW DAYS OUT OF EVERY 3 WEEKS OR SO STILL DIGGING AROUND. MAYBE ITS THE VERY FINE SAND I USED??

Yo custom color, excellent progress man. I am a newbie to this and am in the process of setting up my 180 G. What caught my attention is that I too am a custom painter on the side. check out my site: http://www.airbrushworkz.com

Just curious, and maybe I missed it but where did you get the foam rock from?

Thanks,
Santiago

thanks for the update... any idea where I can get some of those gas canopy supports and how much they would cost?

they are automotive lift shocks for like trunks and such. these where from a honda delsol. i payed like 35 for 4 of them (2 in use and 2 for spairs) all from ebay. or you can go to like NAPA or autozone and find them too. make shure you get gas ones cuz tthen if they do pop there is no oils or other fluids that would come out.

Thanks for the directions! Yes, I was wondering about the gas ones. Thanks and glad to hear the foam back is covered with coralline!

I do plan to have a larger space ~10" behind the tank as I may go with some type of OM return or CL and I want to place my electric panel back there. I plan to have easily removable sides to access that area as well. :D

sorry it took me so long to reply :( its ben a busy past couple months.
im almost done with my big skimmer and will be posting pics soon i hope. me and my wife are going to Great America on sat so this week is busy! :eek1:

No problem and thanks for the compliment. I am going to be looking into this although I really don't know when I will be lifting the lid on my tannk. The top of my tank canopy is nearly 8' high. I was on my later today getting the tank into position open up the top lid and looked down and it's about 3' to the bottom. I found asking myself what use is this? Thank god I have two doors on the front side that are just above the water level.

a little teaser of whats to come.:p
my little 12" x 24" skimmer. its almost done but not in this pic :D
i got it little to hot when doing the cone. just the outside is bubbled and the inside is smooth as glass.
now you know why i chose to lift the hole canopy insead of just the top :)

here is inside my tuperware bubble plate, yes i did say tuperware :) there is 2 returns from the pumps and my water inlet that will be powered by a little giant 3

and a close up of it. the center is a bubble plate drain for the 2 recerculating pumps. its only part of the drain. it helps for recerculating the water better.

and under the plate

and now the plate. i drilled a tone of holes in the tuperware top and being a tupperware top i can remove it to add more holes or clean it at will ;)
thats all for now.......

here is the profile of the skimmer befor pumps and befor i finished the coloction cup.
beforpumps.jpg
the pumps that i chose for this skimmer are the dolphin dp900's. i will be using an air meter on them soon when i get one. during my testing and break in that im doing now they are doing great for making the fine bubbles with out mods to the pumps sofar. with the skimmer full to the cone the use 70-77watts. these pumps are soposed to use 90 watts. when i was testing with about 8galons (just over 1/2 full)in the skimmer they used only 50watts and made some masive foam! there wasnt much back preshure then and now there is, so i may do a test on where i mount the pumps. i may raise them with a couple 90s and pvc to close to the top and see what they do. this skimmer wont win and beauty contests or any thing like that but it will work!

back side with the pumps on :)

front side pic. granted i didnt do a round colection cup, but who cares what shape the cup is. as long as it holds skimm with out leeking we are all good :)
frontside.jpg
doing break in in the garage i got some good foam after start up

i will do more pics soon cuz its broken in now and boy when i put in 10cc of skim from my tank it goes crazy with foam! im hoping to hook this up to the system this week!
