Custom In-Wall 150 Project

What is your strategy for curing the LR? I was always told it's a major no-no to cure rock in a tank with substrate at all the junk that comes off during the curing process can foul the bed real quick.

Really? I didn't know that. I'm just curing it in the tank and letting the skimmer pull out the crud. In fact, just yesturday the skimmer went nuts and pushed up a cup full of crud then stopped. It seems to go in spurts.

The rock I got from That Fish Place was probably mostly cured anyway, the only thing I forgot to do is clean off all the dead debris. But I am getting an amonia spike.

There is no going back now, I'm not taking the sand out. It's not live sand yet, so I guess I could move it around or vaccum it once the curing is done.

By the way, after reading bheron's thread, I realized I have a microbubble problem. What I thought was debris from the rocks are microbubbles. So that is what I am battleing now. Funny thing is, the microbubbles did not appear until I put the rock in, that is why I thought it was debris.

It's one battle after another! :mad2:

I got an idea for your overflow. On my tank it didnt come with any slits in the glass so i got a piece if the plastic guard that slides on to the back of glass canopies, trimmed it down and used a hole puncher to punch holes all the way accross it. It works great! Not sure if your glass is narrow enough to get it on but its cheap and easy if you want to try it.

I think if you have your skimmer cranking there shouldn't be any problems.. it looks like nice quality rock frmo what I can see!

just keep the flow up and stir the sand occasionally to get any settled debris into the water column! great set up BTW!

reefpimp: excellent idea.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you have a picture? I was going to try to glue the eggcrate in, but it is white, so I just bagged it for now.

It's really not that bad of rock, it may look like base rock because it is orange in color, but it seems to be half decent. Nothing like you see from reeferrocks or other places like that though. I'm going to get some premium stuff to put on top soon. I only paid $4.20 lb for this, the premium stuff is over $6 a lb. :eek1:

I did see some nice Salomon Island rock there too, I think that is what it was called, but didn't know anything about it so I got the Fiji. They also had some cool Tonga Branch. I may get a couple of pieces of that for a cave entrace.

Fiji's perfect. Im not one for overpaying for fancy or exotic rock, personally. The tonga branch, however, is cool and makes a difference. But the fiji is perfect!

Looking good Conda, what kind of lighting are you putting in and when will it be in?
Thanks. I was planning on using the 60" Outer Orbit fixture, I like everything contained, but now I do not think that will work due to the metal cross braces. So, now I'm not sure what I am doing yet. Feel free to offer me some suggestions.

The only light the tank gets is the sunlight from the window and my back room 100w bulb.

Ok, I'm tired of filling my return section of the sump each night or two with 2 gallons or more of water.

I just came across THIS ATO UNIT

Anyone have or know anything about this product? I think it looks cool.

It does look cool, and I know one person in our club got one, because I had to glue the brackets in his sump. Weld-On worked perfectly.

Here's an alternative that will save you about $100. www.floatswitches.net We just talked about this on reefcast, btw.

I saw that link before, but I have to see which is better, spending $100 or spending the time creating an ATO that I could screw up. ;) Heck, if I got my tank plumbed, I can do an ATO. I never thought I would get it done.

Reefcast? Sounds like I am missing something good here.

Funny that I'm going to do the same lighting... :D among other things! Though yeah, the 2 bulb fixutre doesn't really mesh well with your braces.

I wish I knew someone who had one that could bring it over to test it. I don't want to spend $700 just to find out the light is limited or something like that.

I am using two bulbs over my 150 but I have a clear glass center brace.

What do you plan to do for moulding around the tank?

Just go to the front page of my site and scroll down to the banner. Or type that word in Google if you want to save time. :)

I'm not sure yet. My wife has been asking me that for weeks. She wan't something there and soon. I have two options that I need to try. The problem is the tank is set back from the wall, and since my flood, the wall is not straight. So, I have over an inch gap at the bottom and 1/2" at the top.

Ahhhh. Got it now. Thanks. For a minute there I thought I was at the olympics. ;) Hopefully it will work on my video ipod.

Ok, I'm listening to the reefcast and this is good stuff. Marc just gave Even his taste test of the week! LMAO!

I had a similar problem with mine. What I ended up doing was using a piece of pine (1x6) all the way around and now I intend (my wife is bugging me too) use smaller molding to take up the space between the outer moulding and the tank itself. My tank is about an inch inset. If I can ever get it finished I will take some pics.

Your PM box is full. You need to empty it, and that includese your SENT box.

Here is my reply:

Your new system has been running with saltwater for a couple of weeks now, easily. When are you adding LR? (Sorry, I just follow too many build threads.)

If you are using LR in your system, a cycle isn't necessary as the bacteria is transferred in on the cured live rock. The four fish you have will be fine in the new tank. I wouldn't add any more livestock for at least 30 days after they have been in the new tank, to let the bacteria levels ramp up to meet that demand.
