Custom rock work

I am getting a 8×2×2 size tank built and going to do rock work with fiberglass rods through it. I am thinking of putting the rock 3 inches from the back wall but having trouble figuring out how far I should build it from the front glass. Is 6 inches too close to the front glass, or would 9 inches be better?

Better for what? Sounds like a preference thing to me.

Less is better. Think about open space tanks that have open water or islands of rock are so much nicer to look at.
