Do the small ones actually split in half or do they rather propagate by dropping off a small part of their foot?

There's a sticky that discusses pedal laceration, but IIRC the issue was never discussed. I think the thread was the catalyst for OrionN's protocol for the use of Cipro though.

I won't cut my carpet , but I just want to show you that it is possible and a friend of mine did it many times with success and it's still under his care for a long time. Me myself I will not do that to the carpet.

+1 just because people cut them doesn't mean it's successful, sorry. I wish it were that easy.

I would go a step further and would like to see that both halves actually regenerated the missing half and not just survived as halves.
