cutting hood down

I had a 40br went to 65 the new tank is 8-9" taller my hood is 12" high. i am running a 250 14 k halide with a 96w pc. The new tank has a center brace if i cut down the hood 5" to get more light will it melt the center brace or will it be ok. I will still be 6" from the tank to the top of the hood. I do run fans in the hood.

If its black plastic theres a good chance it will at the very least disstort the brace.

It will probably crack and warp it but i dont thing it will break it in half
