cyano getting through my filter sock?

Starting a new tank and getting some cyano(sp). I put a filter sock on so i could trap it. Seems like the stuff just goes right through it like a ghost to a wall. I believe I have a 200m cloth/felt sock. Will it get through all of them, even the 100 micron filter sock?

are you sure it is cyanobacter? the stuff is usually pretty stationary unless you are moving it with a turkey baster etc...

i never removed any of mine (could never get a hold of it)...just hit the area with tonnes of flow and it will disappear on its own..

Cyano will go through a filter sock. It's a bacteria. It usually shows up in low flow areas of your tank. Your not going to get rid of it totally until you reduce your nutrients. Increase flow will help it from forming the slimy looking stuff. Chemi-clean can kill it but will usually come back if your nutrients stay too high.

What he said. I'm in the same boat, though. You should get a reactor and put some granulated GFO in it to reduce the amount of algae you're getting. Also, a 100 micron sock is worse than a 200 micron sock in means of filtration. Small detritus can pass through 100 micron socks, when it might get stuck in a 200 micron sock. Anyway, here is a great value GFO/carbon reactor... http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/reactors/gfo-and-carbon-reactors/brs-gfo-and-carbon-reactor.html

It's the other way around. Smaller the number better the filtration the sock is. The number is the size of particles that the sock will let pass through. A 50 micron will filter anything over 50 microns. A 200 will filter anything over 200 microns. Keep in mind that a 50 micron sock is going to get nastier and clogged before a 200 micron will. Which means it will need to be changed more often. I like 200. 100 size socks. They will go 3 or 4 days most of the time. Unless I use my turkey baster :lmao: The 50 micron will really polish the water but don't last long before needing to be cleaned.

Its a new tank, so, needs to stabilize a little, but, was blowing it off my rocks and suck and wanted to try to catch some.
