Cyano Outbreak

I had a light dusting of cyno. I stired it up and got most of it out and started SB last thurs 1/7.....must be helping already because I don't see any returning yet. I'm following the scheduled dosage rates on the bottle, but just increasing it for my volumn of water.

Hey Mike!.... SB here I come! "Odoring" today..LOL

Does anyone know if you are supposed to do any water changes while dosng Special Blend?

Thanks Warren. I put my first dose (It was like half of the larger botttle) in last night I will do a monthly 44 gallon water change this weekend. Did you follow the day 1,8, etc dosage schedule or did you start with the maintenance..? I'm just curious as to which direction I shoul dtake with a 7 month old tank that I dose MB7 on currently.

Jon,
I started with the full dose & followed the weekly dose for the full 5 weeks. Just wait at least 72 hrs after dosing before performing a water change so that the bacteria can colonize on the substrate and rocks.

Hi

I have some Cyno at the moment on some of my sand and some algae on my rocks.

What the best way to syphon the cyno off the sand with out syphoning out the sand as well, or should I syphon out the sand as well.

thanks

when i set up my tank i had cyno really bad and i wasnt sure what direction to go in till i was told that to get maracyn by mardels i read the package and it says its for fish care but i was assured this would work and it did ........each box of it was 6 bucks i picked up 3 boxes and i didnt fallow the directions i turned my skimmer and uv light off and treated 1/2 doses every other day
the box says its safe for inverts but im not sure about corals it worked for me and it was quick within a week u was blown away and it never came back

maracyn is an antibiotic. You could use erythromycin at a low dose and it will basically do the same.
Most reefers do not want to go in that direction unless it's a last resort.

24 hours after the first use of SB and the cyano is lifting from the sandbed.

good to hear!...almost two weeks and still NO sign of that plague....I should have listened to Joe B when he told me about this stuff years ago too...LOL

Thanks Mike, I was truly amazed when I came in last night and saw the Cyano coming up in thick clumps after holding strong for weeks! I was worried at first because my orp tanked as soon as I treated the tank, but my polyp extention on the SPS got noticibly better.. Some things about this hobby are a true mystery! I don't care how much experience one has. Go figure! Joe B was really on to something. It looks like this stuff will stay part of my maintenance regiment. What's funny, is that I used SB to help cycle my tank 8 months ago based on a suggestion from Jeremy at Premium Aquatics. His words were somethig like, " this stuff works wonders!, but make sure your water is well airated". After cycling my tank I switched over to MB7, which seems to have done nothing in helping me with the Cyano.. even at higher than recommended doses. I'm really considering dicontinuing the use of MB7 and just use SB providig the results are consistent. I'll keep everyone posted as things progress..

For years there would be literally dozens of threads on RC & MR where reefers would suffer from cyano and I would tell them to use SB and was basically dismissed so I stopped making my comments most of the time :)

I would say that after your cyano has completely disappeared and maybe a few extra doses of maintenance every 14 days and you do not need to continue if your water quality is excellent and nutrients low. I do not need to keep a maintenance dosage on any of my tanks at home with the exception of a QT tank and my tank at work that does not receive any water changes.

You are the man Warren! Thank you so much for the suggestion. I find that many reefers are such skeptics.. Experience of my own and others like yourself will continue to be my guide in this hobby..

Thanks for keeping us informed Jonathan, I will be looking for some SB soon. One strange thing happened to me last night and I thought I'd throw it in here. My lights stuck on and I found this 3 hrs after they were supposed to shut off. Not a sign of cyano on the sand??? I couldn't believe it! What is this stuff on a timer? LOL

My sand is bleach white in the AM and brown and stringy all day. Do you wake up to clean sand in the AM also?

Re: Cyano Outbreak

Taz, I'm starting to believe you have an alien strain of Cyano.. LOL. Good luck with SB if you try it.

Re: Cyano Outbreak

Sorry Taz, I missed your question.. No, my sandbed is not clean in the morning. However, the cyano is more brown in color versus deep reddish and not sheet-like how it is in the evening after the lights have been on all day.

If I were to buy this stuff could you tell me how much I would need to dose my 400g system. Since I will need to order I would like to order the 5 weeks worth as recommended for the dosing period.
