Cyano Outbreak

Thanks for the great information. I just ordered some to take care of a small outbreak, but will also use it to help cycle a new tank and as maintenance with vinegar/vodka dosing. I've been reluctant to start dosing, but everyone seems to be having good luck with it.

I have been using SB I am in my 3 week and I think its starting to work ... the algea seems to be slowing down .... I did a real healthy cleaning of my tank and it seems to have slowed the algea down :) ..... good stuff

Taz, I agree...mine was not as pungent as the first dose and I also did not see any recommendations about refrigerating after opening. I was just wondering since I have not seen the results as others so I thought maybe this had something to do with the outcome.

Okay, I got a new one for ya. I bought three bottles, only opened one. Dosed this bottle for the first and second dose. Used all the first bottle and opened the second bottle to find that instead of being red it was clear. Thought that was strange and opened the third bottle and it was red, just like the first bottle.

Checked the smell and all three bottles stank to high heaven but the second bottle perfectly clear. Do you think that bottle is a dud or what?

TIA

Try taking a sip of each one and let us know if they taste any different. lol
Just kidding!!!! That is strange that one would be clear.

Forth week on vodka. I dosed my second dose of SB last night and I think I might have goofed on this one. I was slowly dripping a gal. of kalk into the sump and thought it would be a good idea to just add the SB to the kalk and let it drip in at the same time. After dumping in the SB I thought, wouldn't the high ph kill all the bacteria in the SB.

Well I guess I can go to the chemistry forum and get an opinion on this one.

Thanks again

Ok, I've obviously been missing some posts.. Sorry about that. I definitely see your concern.. Were the chemistry heads able to offer much interms of whether the high PH of your kalk mix made your second batch a dud or not? If so, I would dose again on the sixth week and then start your maintenance 2 weeks after that.

Once you dial in the right amount of that mix for your tank, I think you will like the results.. I'm very pleased.. Once your all set, Having doser will make life a lot easier on you. After learning and doing it manually for a while, the doser became a welcomed addition.

OLDF,
Fantastic news.. I noticed similar results in my tank.. There were places that I could not get to it and I literally watched the stuff die back until it was gone..

cdamiano,
Hilarious..

Yea, they said I definitely nuked that batch so I went ahead and dosed another. Seems to be fine. No problems so far. Still don't see any lessening of the brown stuff though.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Gary,

I'm surprised that you haven't seen any additional changes.. Could the brown stuff be diatom by any chance?

well the secret is out..I went to three local places by me that always had it and now everyone sold out!

Guess that's probably what it is. It isn't red and it doesn't contain any bubbles. Before vodka it was just a light brown on the sand. Now it is bright copper colored, much darker and more plentiful.

Any other suggestions?

TIA
