Cyano Outbreak

You don't want to have UV or Ozone running for at least 72 hours after dosing. You have to give the bacteria a chance to colonize before it is stripped from the water column. Contact with either will kill the active bacteria.

even with the maintenance dose? so I'll only use my UV 4 days a week for now then 11 days a week for the remainder of the time I run the tank, as long as I am dosing SB?
thanks for the help with this, I really appreciate it!

11 days every two weeks, don't want to give anyone's boss any ideas about a new work week!

I've had the same problem with a Aqua UV 57w sterilizer. The bulb lasted about 6 months after I continuously shut it down for either dosing or water changes. I have the 57w & 40w modules on different systems and it seems like the 57w does not like to be turned off & on.
I called the company & their dumb reply was to swap out to a 25w module at a discounted price.
I actually still have Jonathan's 25w that I bought from him when he broke down his original tank a few years ago, while I know that the bulb needs to be changed for effectiveness, I am still running the same bulb and it's brighter then the dumb 57w that I have right now.

talked to someone at LFS he suggested a "slow start" power strip for the UV, said it might help...bulb was $55.00, and of course I chipped the quarts sleeve so had to get one of those...$88.00 total, could have got some cool frags with that kind of $.
kind of bummed out really like having UV on the tank to keep down on fish getting sick.

Damn.. I'm getting old Warren I forgot that that was you! Please forgive me Bro. I've been racking my brain since getting back to the hobby trying to remember who I sold it to so that I could ask how things were going. LOL.. Well, I'm glad it's still working well for you.. :)

And yes.. Shut them down even when doing your maintenance.. Just give the bacteria some time to settle..

It's funny, I feel the same about my ozone generator.. With it running, fish are fat and happy for some unproven reason.. With it off after a week or so... Here comes the dreaded white spots to any new additions.. The way I look at it.. All these things that we battle in our tanks usually have a cycle of some sort and I really haven't had any problem following the directions with ozone around my dosing schedule.. It's actually on more than it's off and many experienced reefers recommend to only run ozone or UV when you see a problem. So, it kinda' works out and saves you a a bit on your electric bill in the process.

need help with SB!!
I am on day 14 and I added 2nd dose yesterday and I did not realize but I did a water change today. Not sure if I should add more or I should be cool.
The cyano is getting worse than day one I started using SB. any suggestings?

I would add back enough SB to compensate for the amount of the W/C.

The required amount is on the label.

HTH

Only add back enough SB to make up for the amount of gallons of water that you removed. Example if you removed 20 gal. only add enough SB for 20 Gal. No way that you can overdose using this method.

Week 5 for me and I ran out of SB...Cyano was coming back instantly. I ordered 6 more bottles and did a 275g water change. The next day the SB arrived and I dosed the beginning dose all over again except this time I added 50% more as directed for saltwater. I am shooting to do another big water cange the night before I am supposed to dose the second round and hit it harder this time. I am going to beat this stuff yet!

we are all batteling this red cyno and the sb should help us out. I would like to know has this helped out ppl? I know it has mike and walter.

Just check my before and after pictures in this thread.. The proof is in the pudding :)

I haven't used the stuff, but I know this: "Nothing good happens fast in a reef"
If it's instant gratification that you're looking for, you need a different hobby.

Great product! need to do the full 5 weeks to see the best results IMO. very happy with my results! would recommend this to others. and thank you to those who turned me on to this product!

It was a pleasure meeting some of you guys at the LIRA meeting tonight and reconnecting with old friends! :bounce3: what an awesome bunch of people..

I have some annoying cyano that just won't go away 100% no matter how much I siphon it away. It seemed to start blooming when I began dosing brightwell aminos. Anyhow, I started dosing special blend today :) I'll update with good results hopefully ;)

Cool Rich!, I really think it's going to work out nicely for you.. Good Luck!
