Cyano

Hello all,

I have a little problem and am hoping some of u guys might have some pointers, currently running a mixed reef 250 gal and I'm constantly battling cyano. Water parameters are kh8.5-9 phosphate 0.01-0.03 NITRATE 0.007 on the hanna marine tester.

Could it be the lack of nitrate causing a unbalance therefore causing cyano? Any ideas?

Thanks

thanks for the link klwheat, i read it and it suggests to turn off the lights for three days. not sure if this is a good idea due to my sps

You can go 3 days without lights and it wont hurt your SPS at all. I have gone 7 days before. But for Cyanno, 3 days off, 5 days on, and then another 3 days off if needed works fine.

Try and remove what you can during water change etc. And then give the tank 3 days lights out. You can also renew the GFO and GAC at the same time to really hit the Cyanno hard. Try and increase flow as well.

The combination of the above will sort things out usually.

Thanks Sahin will give it a try. Sahin can you recommend a good aquarium shops in London I visit once a year and usually got to the one on great Portland road aqua design centre....but any other good ones?

Not sure how long ago you been to Aquatic Design Centre, but I can tell you that since the past year or so, they have LOTS of SPS frags all the time. They are £10 each and £50 for 6. They are coloured nicely too. I dont know of any other LFS that has this much frags. Lots of LPS and softies too. Can have a nice fish selection at times too.

The other one I go to H20 Aquatics. Lots of LPS corals, not too much SPS, and fish selection is very basic.

Other than that, Maidenhead Aquatics In Windsor is nice too.

Every time I'm in the uk Sahin I drop in to aquatic design but mainly for equipment so much cheaper than here in aust

Oh, I see. I assume you lived somewhere in the UK. H20 Aquatics is good for equipment. They have decent prices and do throw small discounts along the way for repeat customers. You can get them to order before you fly over here and then pick up and take back with you.

For small items, I dont mind helping you out if you really need something posted out - so long as you wont get hit with massive customs charges/tax. But I suppose potage must cost a lot since Aus is like further away from everyone lol.

i just did a 4 1/2 day lights out on my tank, it seemed to work pretty good, all my rocks and sand bed are clear as of now.. i did the lights out like i said then i did a 30 gal w/c, i am running np active pearls but you can run gfo, i only fed every other day with the lights out and i had my skimmer running and pulling out a lot of stuff. i also re-positioned my p/h my mp40 and 10 to get more of a whorl pool effect in my tank and reduce dead spots. i also turned off my string of blue, green, and uv led light b/c i was thinking maybe that light spectrum was contributing to the growth. and if you have window light hitting the tank you can cover it with a towel or newpaper. after the lights out i just turned on my royal blue led light for the first 24 hrs the introduced my cool whites the day after..

also when i was doing the water change i blew a lot of stuff off the rocks with my turkey baster its a great tool, good luck hope you can knock it out with this method, and i would also incorporate the 3 days light out in to your maintenance schedule i am going to do it once a month from now on, a reef having bright sun on it all the time is not a natural characteristic of a reef environment. i sure you will get other great advice form other just as i have which has led me to the place i am in now.

Hi Sahin thanks for offering to help out...I did try to set up a coral shipping service to aquatic design as I have a contact how gets coral himself direct from the Great Barrier Reef on a fortnightly bassis but they didn't seem to interested for some reason.

Richiero thanks for the info and great point about the light blasting the tank been unnatural...never thought of it that way, definatly going to try the lights out this weekend.

Please keep the thread updated and list whatever you did that helped - it will help others in the future.

I personally just did a 30 gallon wc and working on a 3 day lights out attempt. I'll do the 5 days on with another 3 days out too as I've never tried that.
