Cyanobacteria will not go away

congratulations! I still have some, but to be honest, they don't bother me that much if it stays at the level it currently is. Easily can remove them in my weekly water changes and have good growth for all my other stuff. Fingers crossed that you stay free of them!

It's back. At least I know what to do this time. Lights out for three days starting now. I think this time it is from the sun. I have a two story foyer and the sun is coming through the second story window and hitting the tank for a few minutes a day. Must be a seasonal thing because it did not do that before when I chose the tank location.

I have had problems caused by the large skylights in my house during the summer. Not so much with algae but with coral bleaching/photoinhibition. I installed remote controlled blackout shades which fixed this issue. I think we often underestimate the difference in overall light between summer and winter months.

I agree finding the root cause is the way to fix it but I you want it gone now use ULTRA LIFE RED SLIME REMOVER.

I had it REALLY bad. I was over using Selcon for a fish food additive and putting loads of nutrients in the water(not nitrates and phosphate). Purple mat everywhere. I also noted in my post that it even grew on the powerheads and right in front of them where rocks were getting blasted with flow. I am a firm believer flow is not an issue. Its the nutrients.
Look at my tread so you see for yourself before and after pictures. I highly doubt most peoples Cyano problem was as bad as mine, mine is by far worst pictures ive seen.

Not a trace of Cyano since my last post on it 2 months ago. I stopped using Selcon in my tank. I did about 3 25% water changes after the treatments.

I'm scared of chemicals like that. I have a very healthy stable population of pods and a happy mandarin. Did you have any issues with that kind of stuff after the treatment? Also, it will interesting to see how long it lasts. The lights out technique had me clean for almost three months. But I think my initial outbreak was a separate issue than this one.

But, cleaning cyno is a pain. It may be worth it if the treatment lasts a long time.

I agree, i hate to use chemicals as well but red slime remover works diffrent than chemiclean.Nothing else in the tank was affected that i could see.Pods are still all over the place. The only thing it does of concern is lowers oxygen and the instructions say to use an areator. I did plus i kept my skimmer on the lowest setting so as not to actually pul the product out of the water. The skimmer did most of the aeration. Water takes on a green tint at first introduction and my cyano was cut in half after 48 hrs. Then after the next treatment almost un noticable. Then i did one last after a week or so i cant remember but instructions say to wait some time after the second treatment to test again. Haven't seem a trace if it since. Try all the natural stuff first. If you can keep it at bay great... If all else fails red slime remover is the safest of the "chemicals" IMO
I'd do it again in a heatbeat.
I actually took video of the whole process to post on youtube but never did.

Everything turned out good this time. Except I forgot to bring my light intensity up slowly and part of my Xenia went clear (see through) and shriveled up for a few days. But it recovered and continues to grow like a weed spreading all over the place.
