Cycle time before clowns?

Ok I want to get a tank up as quick as I cant to a ddd a pair of clowns for breeding... If I get precycled water from my LFS and a few live rocks and the salinity is right what time table would you guys thinks would be right?

Test your water after a few days and see if you have any NITRITES, as long as you have no ammonia or nitrites then the tank should be suitable for fish

Yes get water from store with rock, sand (optinal) and some filter media that they use like a filter pad after a few days check your water and if is good you okay to go!

Water doesn't cycle. So there is no such thing as "cycled water". Only LR or filter media can "cycle".

There is a lot more to cycling. I suggest you start reading stickys in the new to the hobby forum. If you rush, you're going to lose a lot of livestock and money.

Also you do know that most clowns will not breed until they are mature, assuming you buy normal clowns which are only 6 months or so old they will not mature for a year+. At this point if they do decide to breed it may happen fast or slow or not at all. Clowns also prefer to breed under optimal conditions.

Worry less about rushing to breed the little guys and more about researching what is required to properly cycle your tank prior to adding fish. Clowns will probably be fine after your LR has cycled for a few weeks and your Ammonica and Nitrite read 0, you can have some nitrates but like said above don't rush. If you use pre-cycled rock you could add clowns right away, but if the rock starts a mini-cycle (which it will) you may lose the clownfish. Its a lot of money to waste to not do things right the first time.

I would not rush anything with getting your system set up and make sure everything is good to go first as you could start to lose a lot of money if you rush things to much.

Thanks guys for advice guys.... I have had tanks all my life and my moat recent wat a 57 oceanic which i broke down and set up 4 times and never lost a fish including a maron clown. Jusy checking on your thoughts and so on its all appreciated.

Then where did you get the idea you could get "pre cycled water". :p

What i really meant was premixed I guess. When I moved I always mixed my own water before I put it in the tank in a garbage can and it was always fine. My local lfs said he would sell me the water for 1buck9 a gallon and thought it would be a big advantage and sine thats not all that exp for a 30 gallon tank I thought I would see what you all thought. I plan on getting a few pairs from a few dif spots smallest being about 1.75 and a 2 incher up to a pair that would be more around the 3 inch size.

How big of a tank do you have,it would need to be pretty big for several pair.I tried to put two pair in a 240 gallon 8' tank and it lasted about an hr.The 2 females would meet in the middle and it was all out war between them. And I had rbtas on both ends.

rench, are you starting to feel a little picked on? It seems almost everybody has a comment on something or another that you are doing wrong. I hate just joining in on the rench bashing, but I agree with what just about everybody else has said and think you haven't thought through what you are doing. And for somebody who has been around RC since 2005 (although only 41 posts) you sure don't seem to have a good grip on what you are doing. How much studying about clown breeding have you done?

I wish your clowns a lot of luck, I think they may need it.

I may be very wrong, but that's the impression I get from your posts and the way you stated what it is you are trying to do.

What sort of clowns are you looking at breeding and what setup are you planning for the rearing of the young?

Im not going to take any offense to your responses because I have done my research an been in contact with the breeders im purchasing from. They have said the same thing I have experienced with being able to get a setup tank in a very short period of time. Like I said I had a maroon clown who lived through many things before. Im looking to do A. oc and posibly and a onyx pair. I know my thirty gallon split in two is plent ive seen people using 10 gallons for each. Just was seeing if i could get an insight

Everyone is giving you insight. But you are telling us we are wrong. So, don't come ask for advice if you're just going to refuse to listen. Your mind is already made up so I think we'll just stop wasting our time with replies.

You could get a 20l and divide it into 3 chambers or a 30 would be ok too. They don't need alot of space if your only doing occy or perc's or even gsm.
If your just gonna breed then I would just have the clowns and a pot in the water and nothing else. You don't need rock or sand. Only makes a mess. If your gonna breed your gonna need a good skimmer. Plan on feeding them 5 times a day or more. I feed mine 6x. If you feed alot then that will compound the issues of water quality with sand and rock. Easier to siphon out old food with it bare.
