Cyanobactor is not like ick or some parasite that you can eliminate and b very careful not to re-introduce into your tank. I think that treating it with antibiotics or products designed to remove it from your tank are just a temporary solution and a waste of money. Those products are not cheap, especially if you are treating over and over again. Just use Erik's advise regarding husbandry and address the source of the problem. Carbon and a Phosphate remover are a much better investment in my opinion than "Removers".

Not to mention you simply don't know what beneficial bacteria the antibiotic might be killing also. Then there is the risk of creating antibiotic resistant strains as well. In the long run, proper nutrient control and water conditions that do not favor cyanobacteria, along with manual removal, will work quite well.

I agree with the lower alk theory as well... Not to say that keeping your water quality at it's best is not an important necessity.

Anyplace I can find a good picture of cyno? Or, for that matter, a set of good photos for identifying different types of algae, bacteria and other nuisance growths?

i just recently conquered my cyano problem with increased flow, phosphate and silicate remover,high grade activated carbon, weekly w.c.s, r/o top off with kalkwasser and a shorter lighting cycle. These are your best possible offense against that horrible bacteria. Also my lfs said discontinue w.c. s but i went with my gut and increased them and tried to siphon as much of it as i could each time. Sure enough i have wiped it out almost entirely after 3 months and no hope. Do what i have done and i assure you that you will beat it . PS the consensus seems to be that this is practically a right of passage to eventually have a successful reef.

I've had cyno problems in the past and it was always phosphates. You should test for it anyway.
