Dam pests

Well A month of so ago I started a thread on AEFW, thought I dodged a bullet. Last night I had to dip 4 of my sps and found a ton of AEFW eggs on them and tons of bight marks. After dipping and removing the eggs I found 3-5 large AEFW in the dip container! Right now I am using a double dose of Reef Dip. What is everyone else using to dip for AEFW???:uhoh2:

sorry to hear man.

used Revive

and when I used to get really mad at the AEFW, Freshwater dip for a short time.

Revive and Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure have both been used with good results. You can also use Potassium Iodide (Lugol's Solution) mixed with tank water, but I forget the concentration, maybe someone will follow up with those details. As I'm sure you've noticed, the eggs are unaffected by the dip. You have to diligently scrape them off during dip sessions. It's been suggested that AEFW lifespan is 5-6 weeks; therefore, many encourage dipping once a week while utilizing a QT for 6-8 weeks.

You can also live with them, as you may have read, by blowing them off with a turkey baster and/or maxi-jet. There's also a product in the ZEOvit line, something like Flatworm Stop, that's shown some promise. It's more about treating the coral to help protect it. You could use that in conjunction with basting. It seems more natural and not harsh on the corals like dipping can be.

Whatever you do, don't panic and keep things stable. You want the best conditions to promote your corals' survival.

I use revive and a turkey baster on them while dipping. Some aefw don't want to come off with just dipping, so I give them a little help with the turkey baster.

Revive is harsh on some corals use the bayer insecticide works wonders just lake sure you rinse the coral very well before you put it back in the tank or it will throw the pods of wack but the coral won't even blink poylps will be put 30mins later hope this helps

How did you prepare a fw dip?.tapwater?.any buffers etc?.
How long a dip?.

Did the SPS tolerate them?

IME fresh water dipping a sps has killed it and it a no no. My bottle for Reef Dip seems to be working ok. I got a few pretty large AEFW in the bottom of my dipping jug. I will be dipping each week for a while on the effected corals. I just hope I get them all.

Bayer knocks them off, but doesn't kill them all the way. Search for it through my posts or in this forum. It is a longer thread, and I think some folks are still testing.

Yeah I read the Bayer thread of treating red bugs and AEFW. The Seachem Reef Dip seemed to work, using it at 2-3X the dose.

You do know that dipping only certain corals is not going to rid them right? I am sure by now you have heard the propper dipping procedure to get rid of them all. It might be a good thing to dip the ones that look bad for a while to vet the numbers down and make sure all eggs are gone before you start dipping all of the corals (if that's something your thinking of doing).

I had good luck with revive and melafix but mainly used revive because I wasn't sure of the right amount of melafix to add per gallon. By the way basting when using revive in the dip bucket removed flesh on a lot of corals. I had better luck with letting them sit 12-15 min and swishing them around once in the dip and once in a bucket of tank water. I am pretty sure I said what I did in the other post you had a while ago though. Good luck!

As of now I see no need to remove an dip all my sps, many of which are not acropora. So AEFW will no effect them and no need to dip. The acros I have not dipped are healthy and show no signs of AEFW and/or that are grown on to a large rock and can not be removed.

Hello Mo,
I use Ro/DI water, with buffer [same ones they use in freshwater tanks!] to bring PH up, the dip is very harsh, and coral comes out much weaker and looks bad. but it works on the flatworms !

I dont dip anymore though ... Thomas pohl has a great point, with dipping, I am just making corals weaker and less resistant to attacks, so that's why I only baste corals weekly now and use FWS, almost flatworm free now :)

HTH,

I have several large colonies that do not show any side affects of AEFW, but if I baste, they come flying off.

Do you have any wrasses to help with the eradication? It will not cure it but every little bit helps.

In the past I have used the quarantine method of removing the acros to a frag tank. (ect...)
Were the system was treated and the DT was left without acro's for 1 month +

Now i coral rx anything that is coming in to the tank (you can never be to careful)
I have heard of wrasses, but they eat during the day and AEFW are nocturnal.

by the way how old is your new tank?
