Damsel spawning behavior?

I've had a pair of yellowtail damsels in my tank for over a year now; they have always gotten along just fine. Today I noticed that the sand under one of the rocks in my tank had been cleared out and one of the damsels has been hanging around in there all day. Is this egg guarding behavior or something else?

Sounds like it.Mine spawned often.

I was feeling good thinking I had more fish spawning in my tank...until this morning. At which I observed a live damsel missing its tail trying to avoid being eaten by its tank mates. Never observed any illness and no new fish added in months. Oh well, another porcelain burial.
