Dan and Meg's 240L

More progress today. Installed some strip leds under the stand so I can actually see what I'm doing down there. Also tidied up the wiring for the controllers and started the plumbing, but couldn't do too much without the sump. Also we added 400 of the 480 lbs of sand which makes it about 5 inches deep.

I havent set up a sw tank yet but have always gonna back and forth between a deep sand bed or just shallow. Im gonna have to read that real good. But now I'm probably gonna start out with a 40breeder so 5" of sand I'd only gonna leave me with 11" of water column so thinking I might only do 2"-3" sand bed.

If your going to go DSB, make sure you get to 4". That's generally the minimum effective depth. Also, get lots of little critters to slowly churn the sand - snails, mini starfish, etc... No major diggers. I know everyone has opinions on DSBs, and frankly its a religion topic, there is no right or wrong. I just like them.

Meg and I drove up to Fort Worth to pick up our sump from Melev's Reef today. Marc did a beautiful job on the sump. It fit perfectly and I was able to finish most of the plumbing and wiring today. We will finish up and start filling with water tomorrow!

We also got 150 lbs of dry rock from Marco Rocks. Really nice rock and we built up 1 of the main rock structures.

Your tank is coming along really well. I love the organization and especially the water proof box over the Apex and other controllers.

Thanks. I worked for a company that made pumps and other fun stuff and we always put our controllers into boxes, so it just seemed like the right thing to do.
You put a new meaning on DSB ( deep sand bed).lol looks good
4" is the recommended depth for a DSB. I think many people skimp out and lose the whole reason for doing it.
Finally started adding water today! And finished most of the wiring.

I sure hope you have a back-up generator in case of power outages. Nothing turns a deep sandbed toxic faster than to lose water movement for an hour or so.

I have a backup battery, and plan to buy a gas generator once we actually have livestock.

I would like to point out that all the DSB misinformation out there is really disappointing. A loss of water movement won't cause an already anoxic thing to turn toxic. Lack of water movement simply kills anything requiring oxygen, which means all the fish and critters could be impacted. It's no more a problem for a DSB than any other system. Lack of water movement = death for any tank.

I may have a new mission - to stop the DSB witch hunt. Wait no, that requires arguing on the internet. Yeah, nevermind. Back to real life.

Well, having had first-hand experience with a dead DSB I could well argue the point, but I guess it's your tank to do with as you will. I wish you best of luck!

Stand and the tank look great and your attention to detail is nice. I just setup my 240 gallon 2 weekends ago and I'm still setting it up. The apex wiring and setup took forever but I'm almost there.

We finally have it all running! Live rock is in, lights are wired up, just waiting for it to cycle then add livestock!

Wow the tank it self looks amazing without anything even in it let alone all the equipment underneath. looks great

Tank looks great I really want a big tank but equipment prices scare me lol

Hey I know u mentioned before about dsb and I read that link u gave me but just wanted more Info on how u play on cleaning the dsb I understand diffrent cuc basically moves the sand enough but what are big no no animals to get with a dsb and what are the best ones to get for one?
