danskim's 300g rimless starphire

so it's pretty common for sea-swirls to seize up?? Had considered those for returns as well, glad you mentioned that since I had missed it somewhere along the way.

I have heard from several sources that SeaSwirls are not the most reliable equipment you can buy. I don't remember hearing anything bad about WavySeas.

I had mine for half a year before I plugged it in, and it didn't work. The motor inside was turning, but that didn't translate into the rotation on the outside. Luckily, I still go service on it for free.
So if you get one, make sure it runs right when you get it :)

Hey Dan,
Mostly a lurker here - Hooray for long tanks! mines 109"L 250G

How did you manage to pack enough live rock in your sump in order to have so little in your display???
I mean , yes I realize it's a 100G rubbermaid, but still, most people would only run it max 2/3 full. Did you manage to get even close to 1 lb LR/Gallon for your total volume???

I only have a 55G sump and a 20G refugium so I figure at least 200-300lb will still have to be in the display and 100 lb in the sump.

Just wondering about the long term sustainability of this look and if you have any 5yr+ successful tanks you've taken the idea from you can show me. I do really like the open spaces.

Actually I changed plans from the first post about the 100g rubbermaid. It wouldn't find into the stand or behind the tank. I went with an AGA 75g.

I have a few extra pieces of LR in the sump, but probably I have only about 225lbs of LR or so.

I think the lbs/gallon is misleading albeit good-intentioned. If you were to compare 100lbs of dry rock (like from marcorocks or bulkreefsupply) and 100lbs of wet live rock, there would be a substantial difference in volume of rock and subsequent surface area available to important bacteria and other organisms. Some claim the difference is at least 2x.

I have 43 fish, but only 2 are large, and 10 are medium sized - so I would consider my stocking to be on the low to medium size. As I mentioned earlier, I am upgrading skimmers to something that should be oversized for my tank/livestock. That will help with keeping pristine water. And my first of many frequent water changes will happen next week.

You don't think you can post something like that not expect someone to ask for a stocking list :D

Dan, I saw the ATB Large yesterday when I met up with Victor. Looks niiiice! :) That AirStar pump looks pretty, and it's huge! Skimmer also has a huge bubble plate on it!

Picked up my Tunzes. Heard you're doing the same ;) Glad it worked out!

Yeah I'm really excited about ordering! (soon)
Some of me wants the insanely huge XL, but I must resist :D

Victor really advises against oversizing the ATB skimmers. They'll stop skimming after a few days if not enough DOCs. He's got a small on his 210g

Anthias question - Did you introduce them all at the same time? Do they get along? I have 4 Bartlett's right now, and want to add more (not sure which type yet)

Yeah, Large it is!

I added all the Bartlett's at the same time. No problems with them.
I had 2 lyretails and added 3 more around when I first set the tank up. They seem to be getting along well except the largest female, who is turning male it seems, is a little bullyish - even to the Bartlett's but not overly so.

Both types get along well and swim in the open with the chromis most of the time.

Go Ventralis! Or Sunburst... they're expensive but nice :)
I might get a trio of Ventralis sometime... I do hear they're harder to keep because of feeding though.

Wow. Please prevent me from buying more corals...
I placed an order for some aussie acans and favias :) or :(
One more fish order next week, and that is IT for livestock.

I need to now focus on getting the new skimmer

The Ventralis are beautiful. I really like them, too.

haha, "that's it for livestock"...I've heard that one before, from myself! Good Luck!

Order that skimmer already! what are you running now?

Haha, I'm still trying to sell a few items before I order the skimmer. I have a few ballasts, a chiller and a calcium reactor.

I'm running an ATI BM250. It's doing pretty well right now.

Haha. I'm on the computer at work. I have a little widget that let's me know almost immediately when I have mail. I also check compulsively :D

The only thing reef related I can view at work for some reason is Tunze and the hamilton tech sites lol. You two are lucky. The rest is just BMW stuff =\
